Warcraft logs - how does it work exactly?

I find Warcraftlogs an incredible tool to help me improve. I check them after every raid and m+ dungeon I do, always excited to see what score I end up with and if I have improved since last time. However, I just don’t get how the scoring system works, especially in m+ dungeons. I am a long time veteran of WoW, but this is the first expansion I use warcraftlogs.

I did a +17 Freehold, where the other 2 dps were a frost mage and a BM hunter. I ended up doing 100k dps on average. The frost mage, in comparison, did 68k. When I checked my logs from the dungeon, I got a score of 91. Pretty decent, but I am aiming to be in the 5 percentile. Out of curiosity, I wanted to see what the 68k frost mage scored. He got a score of 97. From my understanding of logs, it compares to you other players with similar spec. I find it hard to believe that 68k dps with 477 ilvl gets you in the 3 percentile for a frost mage. Or are we compared to other players doing a +17 Freehold key only?

Another example is from a +16 workshop yesterday. A combat rogue, 471 ilvl, did 40k dps on average. Still he posted a score of 81. That doesn’t make any sense to me, taken into account what I know about Warcraftlogs.

Which is why I’m wondering if I got it all wrong? How exactly does warcraftlogs grade your myhtic+ run? Is it damage only? Does usage of utility come into play? I don’t mean to sound petty, I’m just abit confused at this point.

The rankings are specific to class, spec and encounter. So in this case, frost mage for Freehold 17. It looks at a couple of other things than DPS, too.

But to quote the Wowhead guide to Warcraft Logs:

One thing that should be mentioned is to not get too caught up on these rankings . There’s so much that goes into how well a player does in a given encounter that it’s hard to use these as strict rankings between people. You did awesome if you can rank well but don’t feel bad if you end up lower than you expected. There are all sorts of crazy things players can do to get extra rankings that aren’t necessarily the best for the encounter.

I wouldn’t say im too caught up in the rankings. This is part of what keeps me playing the game at this point. Not many things interest in-game anymore

Sadly, regarding M+, it’s not a reliable tool to use. It’s great for raids, but in M+, there are so many things that affect your “performance” that analyzing those logs is quite irrevelant (And so is M+ warcraftlogs ranking).

If you’re really into M+ ranking, then sadly, there is only raider IO, but it won’t tell ya any mistakes you made.
