Warcraft Movie Incantations

Howdy everyone.

I’ve been rewatching the Warcraft movie, and for its flaws, I thought it was a nice detail for them to give almost every spell depicted a unique but consistent, vocalized incantation. The few exceptions were Medivh casting, and he’s the frickin’ guardian.

Since we know that’s how most magic works canonically, I figured I’d transcribe what I heard in case anyone wants to use that in their roleplay!

Now keep in mind that this is Warcraft Movie language, and that I had to do this by ear since the subtitles only say [Speaks other language] during spells, so do take it with a grain of salt.

Still, hope someone can gain some inspiration from this!

The movie had no right to have so good looking looking spell visuals either.

Metzen famously said at the time that he was very impressed with the depiction of magic and considered it highly lore accurate.

The way magic is done in the movie has been a major reference for me for a good while, and definitely sold me on not necessarily using a weapon for casting spells (and how stave flourishes and runes really enhance the feel of it)! Thanks for the reference on the incantations!

Strong Draconic/Kalimag tonation to the spellcasting.
Which might be onto something.

Keep in mind that’s just how I heard it. My spelling could be way off and I could have missed the proper enunciation in some places!

Though I did @ Duncan Jones on Twitter yesterday, hoping he’d shed more light on it. No response so far :pensive:

Awesome work! Considering that Arcane is tied to Order, maybe arcane incantations are a form of Titan dialect?

Very unlikely. Thalyssra incantates in Shalassian, Khadgar incantates in-game using faux Latin. There is no universal language of arcane magic, only what the person in particular is familiar with. The language used in the movie mostly resembles Common.

Not impossible but also not universal. As Telaryn said the variations are vast.

Considering Dragons are an inherently magical race this isn’t too far off, and then of course they’re influenced by the Titans too.

There’s a lot of cross pollination.

Spells may vary from situation to situation. In WoD, during the legendary ring questline, Khadgar used titan magic to free Garona.
But this was seemingly an exception, a device to help us understand Khadgar‘s magic mind, which is out-of-the-ordinary.

Krasus also spoke in ”the language of the Makers” once, possibly Titan, a feat that (it was stated) most dragons can’t reproduce. That suggests that Titan language is its own deal. It carries its own magic too, arguably.

He also once performed an incantation that was described as “the language of Lordaeron spoken backwards, with the wrong syllables emphasized”!

So for Zatanna/Dragon Prince enjoyers (me) the idea of backwards incantations are also on the table.

Perhaps it comes down to intent and focus, rather than the actual words spoken.

That’s the gist of it. The Last Guardian explained that everyone casts magic in a different way that’s unique to them on some level. No two people will ever replicate a spell the same way, no matter how closely you might try to mimic their words and gestures.
