Water flickering since new patch

Hello guys,

Since I updated to the new patch, water is flickering (flashing) to me.

I had to set the liquid details to fair otherwise it is not working well. I could be also caused by ELVUI, because I am using 3d portraits.

Any help/experience from you ?

Thanks

Czecher

I’ve also noticed the water flickering since todays patch, especially when flying past waterfalls. I’m currently not using any addons and have never used ElvUI, so i doubt that is the cause.

Hello,

did you try to set the liquid details into fair ?

I have done this and no issues so far.

Could you try that aswell ? And let me know the result.

Thanks bro.

Confirmed, setting them to fair seems to resolve it for me too. I had (and always have had) them on high previously.

Hmm, then it seems to be an issue from Blizzard. They need to fix it.

Seems to be something that re-surfaces when they do patches. I still have nightmares of all the flicking trees and lamps in SL

And you do not have the addon ELVUI at all ? So, you doubt that it could by caused by ELVUI ?

Aside from addon issues, you could try to see if you need to update your graphics drivers. When I get flashing water and such that is normally the problem.

I couldn’t rule that out completely, but since i have no addons at all and have that issue i would say it’s unlikely.

I’ve had this happen a few times with new patches in the past, it’s quite a known thing with NVidia cards and WoW at least.

First thing i checked :+1:

Noticed the flickering too, dug around a bit and yes, putting liquid to fair seems to work… and looks terrible.

So I dug around a bit more and disabled “Async Ressource Creation” under Graphics → Compatibility Settings and that worked too. Kind of curious if this also fixes it for others.

Edit: Nevermind, the hitching this is causing is nauseating… Blizzard really needs to fix this.

Flickering usually comes from anti aliasing and stuff. When the PC tries to smoothe edges, things can start to flicker / tear.

Usually, when they patch the game, the graphic settings may revert to default. Try to see if you can disable things and just run with lowest settings.

After that, turn stuff on one by one and see what causes the flickering. I am guessing it´s an AA setting, but it can also be something else that may need a fix by the graphic card manufacture in a future patch.

Same issue. I hope they fix it in an upcoming update

Have the same issue… Let me tell you Nokhud Offensive was a horrible experience trying to do the second boss… Everything is already shining and glowing, and now the entire water did too

Yeah, tried that on my initial attempt. Even without any AA the flickering persists.

It isn’t even every plane of water, only certain ones. Playing on my Timerunner atm and in Pearlfin Village the water around the village is as it should be. But the water in the middle part, where the ceremony takes place that has a lightsource and fog over it, is flickering like crazy.

Happens to me as well, not just water tho. Even some objects and lands in Capitals.

Ok, i went through all my addons one after another. Just out of curiousity… does anyone with this problem use Shadowed Unit Frame? Because deactivating that addon seems to have fixed the issue for me.

Will continue to fly around a bit to make sure it doesn’t still happen in other places.

Edit: Went to curseforge and checked in the issue section for SUF, found others with water flickering issues there:

You need to set liquid into FAIR.

Or turn off 3D portraits.

One of these will work. Let me know.

Thank you.

I do not use SUF, but did notice the issue. However it only happens under specific circumstances for me – I noticed the water started to flicker when I opened my mount collection.

Then I noticed it only happens when I open my mount collection. Then I saw this post, looked into the mentioned addons and noticed SUF uses 3D models for its portrait frames. The mount collection tab shows your mount models. Surely that can’t be it, right… ?

So I decided to test that theory out. I opened my character pane, pet journal, transmog menu and looked at boss models in the adventure guide. Each time the water would flicker. Each time the issue would stop the moment those interface elements were closed.

So as weird as it is, it seems to me based on that testing that anytime a UI element tries to use a 3D model, the water starts to flicker.

With SUF it definetly is a problem with the 3D models. If I use SUF and switch the player model to 2D, the flickering stops. If I keep the target model as a 3D I can toggle the flickering on and off just by targeting myself. Switching all models to 2D fixes the issues.

I can also reproduce the issue with my paperdoll, pet journal or transmog menu. When I open those there is flickering for me but only from certain angles. Looks like instead of causing it using SUF and other unit frames with 3D models just makes the issue way worse.

Good job figuring that out Tyrinne :+1:, now we only need Blizzard to take notice and fix this.

I send the following bug report if anyone wants to copy&paste.

I use the Addon Adapt (Almost-Default Animated Portraits) and I too was having this issue, and was playing around with my graphics setting, but to no avail. I saw this post and read most people where having issues with 3D portraits, so I disabled ADAPT and the issue has gone. Sounds to me Blizzard has changed something that is causing the issue with Addons that use 3D models. It also seems to be affecting users with Classic as well as retail WoW, see dmeister406 comments on ADAPT’s CurseForge comments page. P.S. Blizzard won’t let me paste the link :frowning:

Edit: Even the 3D portraits on WQs and when there is dialogue with 3D portraits cause the flickering water effect also.
