Weak auras something simple

Hi all
I would like to do something simple, for start, with weak auras,
specifically once a cooldown is over to show me the spell and make some sound.

Can you please help with something that simple to start learning?
Alex

I’m not so sure a script like that would serve as a particularly good learning tool (i think you’d benefit more from reading some guides tbh).

That said, i can give you the steps to creating just that. I see you’re a Priest currently in Holy spec, so lets use “Holy Fire” as an example.

Preparation:

  • Go to a safe area where you can use Holy Fire (At the training dummies in Orgrimmar for example).
  • Make sure you’re in Holy spec.

Steps:

  • Open weakauras. (by typing /wa in chat)
  • In the top left corner, click on “New”.
  • On the right side, select “Icon: shows a spell icon with an optional cooldown overlay”.
  • On the left side you can now give this weakaura a name, lets change the name to “Holy Fire Tracker” and press enter to confirm the name.
  • Now in the topright corner, right next to the familiar [X]-close button, is a little red button with an up arrow on it, this is the collapse/uncollapse button, click the button to make the WeakAura screen collapse (small).
  • You should see a black square with a questionmark on it in the center of your screen, this is the WeakAura that we’re currently creating.
  • Move our WeakAura to some other place where it wouldn’t be obscured by the WeakAuras screen that we were working in, lets move it to the top left corner of the screen for example.
  • Now click the collapse button again to make WeakAuras re-appear.
  • Our WeakAura should still be selected on the left side.
  • At the top of the screen, go to the “Trigger” tab.
  • On the third line or so, under the “Trigger 1” heading, you can change its “Type” from “Aura” to “Status”.
  • Now a “Status” option appears directly below, which you can change from “Health” to “Action Usable”.
  • Now a “Spell” option appears directly below, here you can indicate the relevant spell, in this case we type “Holy Fire” (make sure you type that exactly as i did, just like how it appears in the spell book), then press Enter to confirm.
  • If you look at the WeakAura (in the top left of your screen) you should notice that its icon has now changed to the icon of Holy Fire, this is one of the side effects of what we just did.
  • At the top of the screen, go to the “Actions” tab.
  • On roughly the 4th line or so, enable the “Play Sound” option.
  • Below that, change “Sound” to whatever sound effect you like, i recommend “Bike horn”.
  • Directly next to that, change “Sound Channel” to “Sound Effects”.
  • That’s it. Time to test it out. Click the [X] Close button in the topright to close the WeakAuras screen (don’t worry, it auto-saved)
  • You should notice that the Holy Fire icon is currently visible on the screen, in the top left, where you placed it.
  • Use your Holy Fire ability, against a training dummy for example.
  • You should notice that the icon now went away because the spell is on cooldown.
  • After 10 seconds orso, when the spell comes off cooldown, you will hear the selected sound effect, and the icon pops back on the screen indicating it can be used.

That’s it.

Though you may want to re-open /wa, select your WeakAura on the left side, go to the “Display” Tab, change some of the settings here such as the Width & Height. Then drag the WeakAura (just like before) to the actual position where you would like to have it. After that, play around with the things on the “Display” Tab, “Animations” Tab (use Presets) and “Load” tab (like maybe only activate the WA while you’re in an instance).

Good luck.

Wago dot io (can’t post links on this forum) offers lots of different WA’s, I’d recommend looking around on their site. Some are groups of several WA’s ment to cover everything in a spec, but there’s also lots of simple ones if you just want to start getting used to it. They’re categorized by Class > Spec.

TellMeWhen is another addon similar to WeakAuras, but much easier to grasp and set up yourself. The addon guides you through it quick and easy. Might be more suitable. But then again, it’s very easy to import WA’s.

Indeed,
wago.io
is a great source for drop in weakauras as a user.

I would be a bit hesitant to use many of the WA’s there as a learning-source though. Many things in weakauras can be accomplished in different ways, and there’s no saying if the WA you find uses a sane method. As a user it often doesn’t matter for a single WA here and there. But if you wanna slowly start putting your own kickass UI together, tracking all your CD’s and debuffs and whatnot, then the performance between things done the right or wrong way can be hundreds of times worse and have severe effects on your fps.

So, if learning and getting better at it yourself is the goal, then i’d heavily recommend actual guides/wikis over learning from deconstructed user submissions. Or maybe deconstruct a user submitted WA to see what the magic sauce is, and then google that to learn more about it through guides/wikis.

Just my opinion anyway. Or hey, cut out the middleman and go straight for learning to make addons with lua. It’s not a massive step above making weakauras and most advanced weakauras end up implementing custom functions anyway, which are straight up addon code.

Maybe either Sandsh or myself are misunderstanding. Could OP please clarify if you’re looking for WA’s to improve gameplay/UI, or if you want to learn how to create your own, advanced WA’s?

amazing reply thanks!!! really
