I have an ASUS Strix Scar 3. My logs show more specific specs.
I have the following problem of this weird, black artifacting on my screen. Here are some examples:

It happens way more when I’m moving and the camera is close to something, and usually is more common when emitting light particles. It mostly happens in WoW, but happens in other games too sometimes.
What I have just learned, is that when using an external monitor, this effect does not happen. So it has to do with my computer’s own monitor. My refresh rate is 240Hz and 3ms. Manually limiting the FPS does not fix anything. It does this at low and high FPS. Also, is there a name for what’s happening here? Is it screen tearing? Artifacting? Changing to Direct X11 or DirectX12 does nothing. Should I just send my laptop back to get it replaced? That would be a huge drag.
Some logs (these were taken months ago. I’ve kept to date all video drivers but the problem still persists so I don’t see why these logs aren’t still relevant):

I will also just note that using ray traced shadows seemed to limit the amount of black boxes and help this issue out some, making it less common… Thought that might help suggest something as to the nature of this problem?
What is this effect? What is it called, and what is the cause? What do I do? So frustrating…
Your Nvidia driver seems to be a bit out of date (seems to be the 445.98, while the current one is the 457.09 ) , so I would start from updating that one. Additionally I would suggest that you try to close any backgrounds applications as the article shows in here.
My pc:
Asus PRIME X570-PRO
Ryzen9 3900x
16gb RAM DDR4 3200 mhz
2 M.2 de 500gb Samsung 970 EVO plus
Asus Rog Strix RTX 2070 super 8gb Advance Edition
Supply Corsair TX850M
Gaming Monitor ASUS VG278QR
As I mentioned, these logs are from an old version. I’m currently updated to the current version, but it’s still an issue. I’ve tried preventing weird apps at startup, to no avail.
I think I’ve maybe noticed it a few times in other games. VERY rarely to the point where I can’t even for sure tell that it’s happened concretely. One black rectangle and maybe I mistook it for something else?
I’ve tried changing the graphics API to DX11, to no avail.
I have the exact same problem
Alienware laptop
i7 9750h
RTX 2080 Max Q
This issue been bugging me since May. I tried many different nvidia drivers including the latest 457.09 and its still happening.
I never seen this happen anywhere outside WOW. Contacted DELL support told me to speak with Blizzard about this issue which is not fixed for many months now…

Edit, i just uninstalled Nvidia drivers and using the integrated one UHD 630 and the black squares still appear!
Edit 2 @Skullwind i think i have managed to fix the issue or at least found a workaround. On the Advanced tab set Contrast to 51 Brightness to 56
Let me know if it works.
@Hardmode that’s an interesting idea… I’ve tried this and I haven’t been able to cause the display bug since… although I haven’t tried very much and replicating it is hard for me – it sort of happens when it wants.
Do you see any improvement when running in fullscreen Windowed mode? (if you’re not already doing so). Are you able to enable Vertical Sync and see if this improves things?
Skullwind, i did these changes and i haven’t seen the black boxes appear again. So try to play like that for few days and report back here. Because this bug is so annoying and there is no information on the internet how to fix this.
Blizzard, if you read this please do something about it because it’s affecting users playing with RTX mobile GPUs.
I don’t know if this is a driver issue or WoW issue but let me tell you this. I was so frustrated with this bug that i did fresh windows 10 install, tried all Nvidia drivers on their website one by one, starting from 441.08 and end with 457.30. Including all the Nvidia drivers from laptop manufacturer list.
And why changing the default values of Contrast and Brightness effect the appearing of these black rectangles?
Just wanted to reply here to say I am having the same issues. I’ve been playing with everything on Ultra and have noticed that turning SSAO from Ultra to High makes a difference and reduces the frequency of the flashing / flickering shadows quite a bit. That said, I have an ASUS GTX 1080 myself and am still having the flickering from time to time.
I’d appreciate it if Blizzard looked into this before Shadowlands!
Hey mate, are you having the same type of flickering as we show on the videos here or is it different visual? Like whole screen flickers.
And are you using notebook or desktop?
