No, I’m not suggesting a retail-like approach to pets, but currently there is just room to store two permanent pets and one “trash” pet when learning skills.
With like two more slots I could save that novelty pet, like good old Mangeclaw or Mazzranache.

We should get 10 pet slots and the pokeball to call out different pets as a rune.
I think the design is to stop you having a pet for every single situation, same reason there is only one call pet.
It’s you give your choices substantial gravitas.
Oh, and that’s the kind of difference Blizzard have said they won’t add to SoD.
If that’s their reason then I disagree with their design decisions back in the olden days and the SoD’s decision to uphold those design decisions.
Pokeball would have a 10 min CD or something anyway. Can’t just whip it out willy nilly.
If you don’t like the way it is you have no choice. Except to stop playing that is.
Remember this is Classic Era with added extras, not Retail with stuff taken away
I agree with you, no need to implement retail functions, just another stable slot.
