Is mage really this bad or am I doing something wrong. I was running through Felwood today on my lvl 54 mage and doing a green quest on the way killing some furbolgs. It’s not that I was strugglign to kill them but if frostfire bolt doesn’t crit it takes forever to kill a green mob. I mean it’s completely pathetic how bad mage is compared to other classes. Is this really what it’s like? What about with better gear at lvl 60? It doesn’t even feel like I’m playing SoD.
I realize mages do well when AoE farming but a lot of content solo playing is just killing mob at a time. Is it like this all the time?
I’m playing a fire mage with pretty basic runes except balefire bolt as I feel like I shouldn’t need it doing open world content. This feels horrible.
Every caster (especially mage) need spell power gear, on levelling thats not very much spell power gear (especially if u levelling without dungeons), when melees have all their base stats (agi/str) on levelling gear, and mages have int/spi that dont provide bonus damage. So yes with high lvl gear (spell power, spell crit) mages will do much better in solo target.
I can’t speak about SoD but fire is historically problematic.
It has more damage but it lacks almost all control. It’s primary purpose was dungeon running, except MC and BWL. Then again, Naxx might have frost resistant creatures.
By the way, as for pace, my level 16 priest was 1on1 killing level 13 stuff this morning in 20-25 seconds. High levels are supposed to be harder, by proxy slower.
Frost offers a myriad of control tools: shield, frost nova, extra slow, random freeze, extra crit (which I didn’t realize until took I 100% frost). While I had to use quite a lot of my kit at 45 in Tanaris (unlike retail where frost is extremely slow (20-30% dps) compared to hunter but also practically pinning down the targets) it wasn’t problematic whatsoever.
I did level my very first mage in 2009 as fire, and I had my fair share of struggle. Loremaster (constant 5-10 levels advantage) helps.
as the others said, depends entirely on your gear, did you level 30-40 in incursions? if you didnt your gear is pretty terrible for your lvl.
The mobs have increased health and damage to counteract the increased player power from runes and leveling raids so if your gear has no +spd on it youre gonna struggle.
I don’t think my gear is that terrible. I have some epic items from gnomeregan with spell power, but yeah the gear isn’t great. I just find it wildly underwhelming that my mage needs to pause to eat to full hp after losing more than half of my hp to a green mob that is just shooting it’s bow and arrow at me. On my rouge I just press backstab 3-4 times and everything dies. I’d have lost maybe 10 % hp or less against a green mob.
Mage just feels really trash which is a shame because it’s my favorite class fantasy, I enjoy the way the spells look and I generally like the toolkit. The 3 second cast seems ridiculous. There was a balance druid next to me like 5 levels lower nuking the mobs down in just a few seconds.
I would say mages are in general bottom of the barrel in SoD, alongside warriors. Maybe that’s a conscious decision by the devs, given that these 2 classes were a cut above the rest in Vanilla
You’re hittingthe tough spot where your gnomer gear isn’t good enough to power through the high HP pools the mobs have in SoD.
Every class feels it at some point, you just need to push through and when you’ll get your hands on some T1 and T2 gear you’ll immediately feel a lot better.
