So hi to all. I have always had a problem with picking a main( that grass looks greener ). So i was looking for a bit of an advice. I am not confident enough to be tanking so usually i play as a dps class. I have narrowed it down to Spriest Fury warrior and unholy dk but cant seem to move from here. I like to be useful in the group so utility is appreciated but i always worry that if i pick a class people will treat me as if i have Covid( no raids, myths ). Can it be like that or thats unlikely?
Shadow priest.
Well as a rogue. You get plenty of utility and uses, A bit of a learning curve tho⦠But its doable. Warlocks and Death knights to have their combat ressurections. And Warriors do high damage. Hunter is the easiest choice, Kinda like playing a fps shooter class in an MMo game in my opinion. Seen some pretty good ret paladins around too. And of course⦠You canāt go wrong playing a belly dancing boomkin. Just bellydance trough those meeters and pvp. Nuke them all.
wow i actually forgot about druid alright lets try it out! Thank for the swift replies!
Oh no⦠What have I done. ā¦Hunter! Go hunter!!! Anything else!
you really made me laugh right now. But another question can you get ālocked outā of content by being wrong class? Like oh you are a survival hunter go survive somewhere else we need more fire mages in this raid
Are you asking what class to pick or what spec to pick? Because thereās a big difference. If youāre picking an entire class thereās a lot more stuff you need to consider.
Well out of the Spriest fury warrior and unholy dk which one you would recommend me?(and the druid)
Depends, which content we talking here? Raiding or dungeons?
The two vary as to what utility really means honestly.
When looking at raids, yeah a DK offers āutilityā in the form of the Brez and the AMZ absolutely. SPriest offers MD and stamina buff etc.
In a raid, a rogue offers no utility, as shroud is pretty much useless as is dispel enrage.
However in dungeon content iād say rogue offers some of the best utility for a DPS. Shroud is suddenly way more useful, as is dispel enrage. Having a class that can reliably reduce aoe dmg taken and heal on demand is also very good for the healer. CLoS is really good in a 5 man where the healer is responsible for everyone - being able to cheese a mechanic to give your healer breathing room is really potent.
This is also not even considering the control rogues offer. Blind has uses in dungeons for sure, as does sap on occasion, but the stuns. Iām sub, and yeah I may not pull out the big daddy numbers all the time (but I can pull out some pretty big ones situation warranting) but what I can do is repeatedly stun multiple mobs as required, breaking any cast (irrespective of whether itās kickable or not), keeping them still and stopping them dealing damage. This is absolutely huge, especially on packs with several weak mobs that can put out a truck ton of damage if not dealt with quickly (Sons of Hakkar in DoS corridor come to mind, stunlocking them in rotation makes them a piece of piss for the group even if it impacts my DPS).
So yeah, which kind of content were you preferring because it really affects your answer. I donāt raid reliably, so for me, rogue is a good pick for a nice utility dps for dungeons. We have nice niches and at least one of our specs will always be āgood enoughā and having variety to swap up my play across different spec styles is awesome. This said, subs chain stunning is just so amazing (as is the burst AOE) that iām reluctant to give assy a proper go atm.
Out of yours, iād say that DK is probably the best pick for raids alongside druid as a brez is always good in a raid and deaths happen.
When it comes to 5 man, DK still pretty decent, but a Spriest becomes a lot better as MD is way more useful in 5 mans than raids, as is soothe and purge.
Druid depends heavily on a) the main dps spec (feral/balance) and b) the affinity you run. Having a balance druid that can pump out some bursty aoe healing though is amazing alongside all their other potential control.
Warrior is probably the least on utility of them all iād say. They deal very good damage, but beyond the shield break and shout, they donāt offer anything amazingly playmaking in same sense that a mass-dispel does for example.
Me as a complete casual player(started seriously in Shadowlands pre patch) I dont even know what i am looking for. Mythic dungeons appeal to me so i will focus on them.
Honestly, if you arenāt sure what to pick but want to be dps, Iād go druid or shaman.
Why? Because you can choose later on whether to be ranged or melee - or even be flexible depending on the group and the affixes. Storming? Go ranged. Volcanic? Go melee.
Shamans are probably higher on utility, with ranged interrupt and bloodlust, though right now enhancement is in the dog house. Elemental seems like it could sneak up to a very good damage dealer though. Thereās also a good chance that resto shaman will be one of the two meta healers in 9.1, so thereās an option there if you fancy trying something different.
Druids bring you knockback, mass roots, and some sort of interrupt in either spec. They are also my favourite open world class due to their speed and stealth. I found balance a really easy spec to pick up and get into, so it gives you a bit more time to think and react. Shame about the Starfall nerf though. Resto is probably no better than an average healer in 9.1, but healers do seem quite well balanced for once (exception of holy paladin).
You will not get locked out of anything playing any class. So donāt worry about that, But they do play different roles in their mythics and raids and pvp. and cross talents. So whatever you pick. you propably will need to do some class/talent research for what Endgame you want to commit to. And people do have their preferences. But Iāve seen every class in every endgame content. Donāt think any one class in particular are āāAh no goāā for people. But yeah⦠āāMetaāā is still a thing⦠But it wont lock you out. As far as Ive seen.
Now this is some happy news! At least that is off my soul!
Good classes for 5 mans are those that specialise in hostile utility (kicks, purges, dispel enrage) beneficial utility (dispels, immunities) and also in-fight control (stuns/silences).
Rogues are very high on in-fight control (especially sub) and have enrage dispel, reliable aoe dmg reduction, CLoS for cheesing and ofc shroud. Sap is also good for certain skips (like in MoTS). They also deal nice damage when played well - They are a great dungeon pick as they have several ānichesā no other class has such as the sheer volume of stuns and shroud.
Hunters have trap and dispel enrage and also BL. They can immunity stuff reliably with turtle as well. Hunters donāt have amazing in-fight control outside of setting mobs up to be kited. They have good damage profiles well suited for M+ with their aoe - They are a fine pick for dungeons, but other than turtle donāt have a particular USP.
Warlocks have cookies which are welcome for most groups as well as offensive purge and brez. Locks bring good damage to the group, and can āself-careā reasonably at times. Locks are good if they bring the brez and purge as their USP, but their value decline if you have a class with these already. Their in-combat control is restricted to Shadowfury, which, whilst good and aoe, isnāt on a super low cd.
Mages bring a fair amount of stuff. Aside from having obscene damage potential, they have powerful defensives to keep themselves out of trouble which is a big deal in M+. They have a lowish cd aoe root which is amazing utility. They can purge. They offer the int buff and free drinks (both USPs) as well as lust. They also have poly as needed for reliable locking of a mob not under attack. Mages are an awesome pick generally. Oh yeah, they can decurse as well, and there are some nasty curses in SL dungeons!
Warriors offer shouts as a USP and an immunity breaker, however immunity breaker is not very common problem in dungeons. Beyond this they offer ācommonā stuff other dps bring, like a kick and a stun, but their stun is moderate cd (and a talent). Their main draw is they bring a lot of damage which is usually reliable.
DKs offer AMS for an individual cheese, as well as brez and AMZ for utility, both super cool. They can charm undead which is HUGE when used correctly especially in places like PF, ToP, NW and DoS. They bring decent aoe damage, especially unholy. Theyāre a pretty solid dungeon pick, although they lack in-fight control compared to some classes.
DH offer a purge, an aoe stun, a potential ST stun (talent), a good defensive, and darkness. Their CC of imprison is a good one too for skipping. They have a lot going for them in a dungeon, and their aoe damage is pretty insane and ST much better these days. Solid pick. If Vengeance is tank some of their utility wanes. In combat control is alright, the aoe angle is great for certain packs but they cannot lock a single target for terribly long.
Druidsā¦where to begin. Druid is very much dependent on the affinity and main spec.
Balance offers decent ranged control tools which make setting up kites and such very easy. They can dispel curses and poisons which is welcome. Most of their utility comes from their affinity choice, a resto affinity boomkin will be able to pull off some good burst healing when the situation demands which is massively useful. Balanceās damage is also super good obviously.
Feral is a bit trickier than balance to play and has some issues on the utility side comparatively, they donāt control aoe mobs as well, but can control single mobs a bit better with stuff like maim and slowing them with infected wounds. Being melee, theyāre more prone to having to āwatch themselvesā unlike balance which means theyāre potentially a higher healer burden - skill varying.
Monks - Monks bring a crapton of utility to a dungeon. Firstly the 5% physical damage buff is massive. Brewmasters and Mistweavers arenāt super common so a WW often has this as a USP. They have instant ranged CC which is good for keeping a mob rooted and out of the fight at short notice. They can aoe stun a pack but also potentially displace them with RoP meaning they have two relaible methods to prevent mobs casting in an aoe situation. RoP on itās own is massive anyway as it has huge potential for super good plays. They can dispel poisons and diseases. They can āpseudo cheeseā with Karma. Their damage is great as well. Monks as dps are a mega solid pick for dungeons. Oh yeah, their mobiltiy is insane and they can safetly LoS pull for a tank with lightning + transcendence to behind a wall.
Paladins offer some interesting stuff for a group. The aura is a bit āmehā in a group versus raid, but welcome. BoP is potentailly massive when the situation needs it and the same can be said for Sac and Freedom. Paladins have big guns abilities but theyāre not needed every time which dampens their appeal. They have cleanse poison and disease and can immunity themselves as well as ālifesaveā with LoH. Their off-healing is good (at cost of their DPS). Their in fight control isnāt amazing (outside of stunning undead packs) but their stun is very long duration which is a plus. A pretty fair pick but it really depends if their big guns are needed.
Priests have purge, cure disease and stamina as some rather generic utility. Mass dispel is freaking HUGE in terms of usefulness, allowing a priest to clear Bursting or for example debuff stacks on final boss SoA. Priests can soothe for skips on packs. Power Infusion is also there, but many shadowpriests are better off using it on themselves (but if they pick TE leggo, they can give it to themself and a friend, which means itās back on the table, and is a big button!).
Shaman offer a cool amount of dungeon utility. Firstly, earthbind is underrated but a huge boon with the kite-meta we got going on atm. Shaman have low cd interrupts and purge, and can cure curses. Enh has more utility than ele in exchange for role safety: enh also brings windfury totem which whilst not the biggest buff, is there. Ele is safer and less at risk. Both bring the earth off-tank and bloodlust as well, and reincarnation ofc. Both really good picks, but enh isnāt terribly favoured atm despite the fact itās actually very good.
And, I think thatās everyoneā¦? Not exhaustive, but a quick rundown of pieces of what each offers in the dungeon situation. Itās as much down to the player as the class though. All of the potential a class offers is nothing if the player just focuses on āthe numbersā of their DPS. Having a mage that will decurse (when the healer canāt) or a shadowpriest that mass dispels to help the healer out, this stuff is potentially massive if the one playing the class uses it.
Also iāll add, all classes are capable of being picked for most dungeons, rather this is more to help you maybe think about āwhat tools you want to bringā than anything else. Yes meta bias exists but outside of the top places, it doesnāt become a huge factor and people will take you irrespective of class absed on ilevel + M+ experience.
If this guy isnt MVP then i dont know who is. So from everything so far i decided to try shadow priest and druid just to see which one feels better for me. I wanted to play rogue but my friend called dibs first. So probably we will be leveling sub rogue and either a druid or spriest. Thank you for all the time spent to help me it means a lot i finally have at least some kind of idea what to do.
I have bias for priest over druid, but priest is super good, give it a spin, seriously. Mass dispel is such a powerful tool and no other class brings it (except Mistweaver with revival, but thatās on a whopping 3 minute cd on arguably the rarest M+ healer). SPriest is worth taking for mass dispel and the great damage alone. The stamina buff, soothe, purge and potential Power Infusion is just cherry on top.
Priest is such a cool class in general, honestly. I need to play mine a bit more, but loving rogue life too much atm
i hope your friend enjoys sub, itās so much fun now itās actually able to perform and can deal such crazy burst aoe and priority damage. Ridiculously fun! The synergy with our conduits and dealing shadow damage from other sources also makes for cool plays (iāve had my active trinket nuke crit for 18k on itās own haha) and as mentioned, chain stunning mobs by tab target cheap shot during dance is big. What tank and healer is going to complain about mobs not dealing damage for 4 secs and then another 2?*
*Disclaimer: they will complain if itās sanguine week and you stun them in the blood pools, never ever do that
actually one the first characters i created was a priest so LETS DO THIS!
