What do " casual " players do?

We play the game casually.

Well… people are different. Things you find boring, others might find fun and the other way around. And there is nothing wrong with either in my opinion.

My reasons for being a super-casual is that I got severely burnt out by raiding during Wrath and haven’t stepped back into that scene since. It just isn’t fun for me anymore. My goals in the game is to get the best gear I can obtain by doing the content I enjoy doing - That gear is a lot lower than what M+ and raids offer - and that’s completely fine with me.

Some days I play a lot, some days I play a little, some days I do not play at all. The casual approach is exactly that; casual. I have tons of stuff I like to do, but since there aren’t other people relying on me being available, I can do all of them at my own pace.

I used to focus on my collection and levelling alts. I mean technically I still do given I farmed this set as soon as old scholo was available.

These days I do some content but I don’t enjoy it much. PvP is a hellscape and M+ isn’t much better. I got to 2k in the latter and stopped.

^^ This is really what it boils down to. Fun is totally subjective. Different people find different activities fun.

Some people like PvP and it’s not really an activity I enjoy. That does not mean that PvP is not fun. It means I don’t find PvP fun.

I collect transmog, level alts from time to time and design transmog sets for them. I would gladly fo more, but both BFA and shadowlands end game grinds burned me out too much to spend more time with the game than I should.

I would not consider myself casual, but I also enjoy doing content that is considered as such by most. I do my rep grinds, I do my Loremaster, and I just do casual RP on my mage from time to time (nothing serious, really).

I would guess I’m ‘casual’ and do many of the things in the thread.
Questing, exploring, collecting, achievements, the very rare solo content, the story, the occasional battleground, reputations, pet battles, old dungeons/raids solo to challenge myself … and probably a ton of other stuff I’ve forgotten. I play one character almost all the time - have one or two alts I’ll play occasionally but don’t really have time as there’s too much to do on my main.
I don’t do current dungeons, raids or transmog and it frustrates and annoys me when campaign questlines/exploration/loremaster etc are gated behind dungeons or raids.

Thank you, I hadn’t noticed that - I too got it on 12th July

I enjoy both raiding and mythic+, but I am “forced” out of it at times(like right now) due to real life duties. I still find plenty of things to occupy me in periods. I enjoy leveling(though not on retail anymore, I go on classic for that), gathering mogs, finishing questlines, random achievements and whatever other activity might occupy me from time to time that doesn’t involve group play.

If no solo activities don’t interest me at the time, I just do other things(other games or projects irl) instead.

During TBC the game was all about endgame for me, and I hated leveling at the time, but that has changed greatly over the years. I guess you are just one of those who only have interest in endgame? Then it’s understandable that you don’t see what else there is to do than… endgame.

Yea that’s awful. I won’t lie, a big part of the reason why my characters are almost all humans is because of their bonus on reps. I’m taking everything I can to make it easier, I hate grinding for it.

Yeah, this isn’t great.
I was talking with my friend about the Ysera story which I thought was quite a good story but he didn’t know about it. Turned out he was only Valdrakken renown 16 or something so couldn’t see it.
I’m nearly renown 20 with Dragonscale so haven’t seen the story that needs 24. By the time I’ll be able to see that (in a few more months probably) it’s old news and doesn’t fit in with the rest of the story I’m doing.

Got the same gripe with this. I do not understand the design purpose behind this at all.

Indeed.
The Story isn’t good enough so that people will grind a rep for it. So people who don’t like rep grinding are missing out.
I’ll do the rep grinds (once anyhow, I generally don’t do them more than once). So I’ll see the story but it might take me a while as I won’t be grinding hard, I’ll get there eventually. But I’d do that anyhow for the ahieves etc.

I mainly just try and collect cosmetics. The barrier of entry for Raids/mythic+ gets larger and larger with each expansion/raid. it’s got to the point where if a guild wants to progress heroic they’re actively screwing over other guild members in order to make the raid easier which just leaves a bunch of the casual player base left with no real goal other than solo content.

I do try and get curve every patch and i did get KSH yhis patch but still. They release content that is way too difficult for the vast majority of the player base and then nerf it later to make it more doable for those people. Problem is when they nerf something you have the people who have already done it like 2 months prior complaining that its now free when in reality its still pretty hard for the casual playerbase.

I hate reputation gating with a passion and the worst was Suramar when not only was it rep gated but also had time gate and collect X amount of crap on top of it too.

All that crap doesn’t make me hyped about the story or make me want to do it all it does is it makes me want to play games that are not designed like rotten potato.

They just dropped a new patch so my casual behind is doing whelp day care and running around the time rifts. Then I still do suffusion camps, ZC stuff and I have a few last campaign quests to finish.
If I get bored I’ll level an alt or see what I didnt do from previous expansions and go do that (every so often I will do island expeditions and collect medals from BFA for some cosmetic stuff I missed).

I think casual players who dont spend alot of time in game rarely run out of things to do!

You can abandon the weekly quest and get the current one instead.

Casual things I presume…

I’m quite casual.
Doing like one low-key run per week with guildies only.
Epic BGs because I do like PvP in WoW even there are a lot of flaws.
Trying to improve my reputations through world quest and weekly events.

Now, I might try to improve my crafting level.

Zankara resumes well what you can do in WoW.

I see myself more as a semi-casual player (but probably aren’t) and I think M+ is quite fine. But when it comes to raids I think it is safe to say I am not playing them for 3-4 main reasons:

  1. Loot Pool is not always interesting
  2. Transmogs must be interesting for me to get (I loved the new set for Paladin but stopped caring once I realized there is AGAIN clipping of the robes in the run-cycle-amation)
  3. Gathering Raids is too time consuming and takes too long.
  4. Finishing an entire Raid is too time consuming and takes too long (because of the many bosses)

If I would be to decide how I wanted Raids to be, I would do the following.

  • Have only 6 bosses in total, with them being…
    • First 2 are introduction for the setting and basically minor followers of the main boss (weak, easy to learn)
    • Second 2 are the Lieutenants of the final boss (medium, requires a bit more thought)
    • Last 2 are the right hand and the final Boss of the Raid (hard, requires coordination and a minimum level of communication - preferably voice chat or via a callout system - see addons)
Sidecomment: The positions on the ladder should stay the same but the characters can be exchanged, based on the relevant narrative.
  • Due to less bosses, give more loot. Every boss has tw drop chances per player.
  • Have more “horde mode”-like breaks between boss fights where you have to work as a raid together to just kill the ads while following an objective (opening a door, holding a position while Story Characters move or similar things)
  • Restructure the entire music of Raids to be like the Raid music formula of modern games with the music progressing based on encounter progress WITHIN a boss fight. Example from Destiny 2.
  • Give every Raid, without a grind, a Fast-Travel system inside of it so players that get exchanged can quickly catch up to the raid without requiring a damn Warlock to do it!
  • Use Live-Render cutscenes over pre-rendered ones. Just do them properly, not as bad as Shadowlands did. I want to see my Raid and my own Character do awesome :poop:! Not some pre-rendered action!

That’s all I would change about Raids to fit for me.

These are the game-loops I know of from the top of my head:

Completionist:
Players who play to complete an aspect of the game by gradually collecting.

  • Get all the achivements
  • Get all the mounts
  • Get all the titles
  • Get all the triva / misc collectables

The battlers:
They want to fight and win in their chosen field, going for the very best.

  • Pet battles
  • PvP / Soloshuffle, world PvP, duels, arena or simply casual unrated content

The explorers:
The call to explore and know of every part of Azeroth and beyond.

  • Open world exploration
  • Beyond the boarders exploration
  • Questing and experiening all the lore

The candycrushers:
Some people just enjoy minigames.

  • World Quests
  • Events
  • Hidden secret puzzles

The socials:
It is an MMO and they want to be part of the MMO and RPG

  • Roleplay events
  • Roleplay in general
  • Non-roleplay social events
  • Competions and other events, like foot-races and eating contests

The chilled:
They just want to relax and turn off their brain for some time. Real life is rough, it is time to recharge.

  • Fishing
  • Gathering
  • Walking around aimlessly, just enjoying the scenery

And the things I mentioned is only what I have seen and got in my head at the moment. I am not taking part of the casual content sphere, yet I do know it is wast and the ones within it are really driven and happy players.

So I do hope you take the chance to dive and try a bit of everything. Who knows, maybe you find something you enjoy in addition of raiding/dungeons :dracthyr_heart:
