In Warcraft RTS games you were at war and crafting buildings and war machines to win. Pretty self explanatory. Hence the name Warcraft.
In WoW, World of Warcraft…
The world is now empty, it’s a lobby game. World is gone.
The “war” is over and never really kicked off to begin with. A few skirmishes here and there but it never truly felt like a war.
Craft? Who cares about professions anymore? Been irrelevant for several expansions.
I hearby rename the game: Happy Elfland Lobby Adventure.

On a serious note it began as a spinoff of the Warcraft rts series (which was itself a spinoff from an overarching and diverse series of self-contained rtses of which only orcs and humans and starcraft were made and became franchises of their own). As it was an open game set in the world warcraft was set in, blizz decided on that name I guess.
I think the WoW acronym was a factor too: describes and promotes itself!
