I want to play it but what has changed?
I played a fair amount of OW 1
In short:
Teams went from 6 to 5 (1 main tank), all content is now behind a Battlepass instead of lootboxes.
Some new heroes, some reworks, some role shifts.
Can you play or do you need the pass?
this sounds like such a downgrade 
I get the whole lootbox fiasco but I thought they’d still be left for free ? just not paid
The battlepass is free and has a paid portion. You basically progress on the same track.
Since you came from OW1, you’ll unlock most heroes for free but the remainder you’ll have to unlock for currency or the pass.
Its a optional battle pass.
The reason its changed is because of laws regsrding loot boxes being a form of gambling. Imho its alot better.

Most free battle passes i’ve seen…suck and they don’t compare to the paid version at all
I never felt the need or drive to buy Lootboxes , however battlepasses make you feel like you’re actually missing out
Well yeah thats true.
Either u make things super expensive i.e lootboxes whicj generates a smaller quantity of paying customers but who invest far more.
Or you lower costs but widen the paying audience to cater sadly.
