Hey everyone, would any one mind explaining to me what sharding is? Ion mentioned it, i've seen it spoken about in game and on the forums but I'm not sure what it is.
Its when you can see people from different servers appear on your server.
Blizzard did this to make it seem the world is more crowded.

It's like an instance of the server. Just like there are different instances of dungeons, there are also different instances of the whole world environment you're in, or zones or even the whole world.
I'm not sure how it's applied here. I'll probably be corrected if I'm wrong :)

Oh so it's kinda being phased
It's old skool loot mode.
You kill a boss with 25 people. Exciting! Items time!!!!1
... arg but noone wants the junk.
So an enchanter receives said unwanted items and converts them to shards.

NO. NO. NO. Phasing you are still on the same zone instance but the world looks different to you.

It's a load balancing technology. Realms as separate worlds are effectively dead.
It has two functions: split players if there's too many. This particularity happens at the start of an expansion. If you have a large server like Draenor that has thousands you can't have them all in the same zone. Sharding creates multiple copies of the zone to split the load.
You also have the opposite . Most people are at max level so the low level zones are practically empty. Sharding brings all players together. If say there's 20 people in the whole region who want to level in The Barrens at a particular time you dont have 20 instances of them sharding would bring them all together.
There's also four types of sharding pools that you can belong too.
There's now only PvE servers and PvE-RP servers. RP sharding is separate due to the separate RP rules. If you see posts of people complaining that the game is dead they are most likely on RP servers as they only have a few small realms and one big one to share players where as normal realms have tens of realms.
There's also a war mode for both types where you can PvP, essentially opt-in PvP servers. RP Warmode is an even smaller amount of players.
There's no way to manually enter shards it's all automatic but you can join other's if you group with them, providing they do not have war mode on.
It's very similar to mega servers that other MMOs have except there's still some stuff tied to realms.
something blizzard did to destroy the server identity and community of wow...instead of just deleting half the realms and getting players there to choose a new one to solve low pop

Imagine the rage on the forums if so many players were forced to change names to merge to servers.

And Admit people are leaving WOW? Yeah right lol
Here are list of techs that people mentioned and what they realy are:
- Phasing: Some places have multiple phases, each phase have differnt npcs and can have different terrain. It's used to tell more immersive story because your actions affect how the world changes. Players that are in different phases can't see eachother if they are in the same place.
- Cross Realm: It's used to bring players from different realms. It was introduced first as a way to populate zones that don't have many players in with players from other realms. That way people leveling characters would find other people to interact with.
- Sharding: It is a load balancer. It's purpuse is to spread players from the whole Region(here EU) evenly across multiple instances of the zone. It works cross realm and each instance is called a shard. Players with warmode on are on seperate shards. This system tries to keep zones populated with players and at the same time not overcrowded. Also thanks to sharding servers don't burn during launch of an expansion or any simillar event with all the players in one spot.
Cedrad explains it very nicely.

About sharding. Its become quite the hot topic and was wondering if you know:
Say you have a classic server. The max population online is 3000 (example)
If you implement sharding does it affect the maxium population online? So even if there are 2 shards of Durotar both of the shards are counted towards the maxium server population?
I am asking this as people seem to think that sharding enables us to have massive populations and the way Ive understood it sharding just makes a zone playable (example server launch) and does not increase the total population of a said server.
A typo of sharting.
Is the feature that kills low level population servers, giving players no benefits from making characters there, like less people to compete for stuff, but all the cons like a dead comunity or AH.

This was a stomach punch to the concept of community.
Now, you can just ask like the biggest tool, and there will be no consequences. In the past, people would remember. Your individual reputation was something you cared about. You would try to be friendly, and build your "local" reputation.
Today, you don't have to talk. Being nice or a tool, has no positive or negative repercussions. So, no one is nice, because there is no reputation to be gained, and tools are tools.
Warmode is an example / no matter your realm.....if you opt into warmode you’re ‘sharded’ with all other warmoders. Think of it like a big realm of likeminded players ...only you can’t trade.
