Could you technical gurus answer a couple of questions regarding WoW performance?
Is WoW more CPU-bound or GPU-bound? Where should I put my money?
Does WoW have a preference for Intel or AMD CPUs?
Does WoW benefit more from more VRAM or from faster GPU speeds?
Are there any known issues with certain hardware that I should avoid (f.e. a GPU family or consistently faulty drivers)
If relevant, my monitor is 4K, so I’d be playing at that resolution
For mass combat, you need the most bleeding-edge single-core performance. Starts at a value choice like Intel i5-12400F, then Ryzen 5800X3D up to X3D 7000 Ryzens, and the latest i7/i9 K CPUs. Aside from that you need quite a top-tier RAM kit to milk that 10-20% difference between basic and top RAM kits (timings, MT/s).
For GPU you need a GPU to match your resolution. So if you want 4K you need one of top tier GPUs. There is no escape from that.
As mentioned - WoW tends to have bugs/regressions on patches and you may need to wait a while or never for them to get fixed.
Actually, WoW has always worked well for me until the current expansion. Now I often have severe FPS drops (mini freezes) for a second or two, and then it goes to normal again.
I couldn’t find a solution, so I thought my CPU/GPU couldn’t handle some graphic-intensive tasks and maybe it was time for me to upgrade my PC which is quite old at this point, but used to be top a couple of years ago.
I haven’t made up my mind yet though, so I’d like to find out what I can expect if I do upgrade.
Single core CPU, plus WoW loves cache so AMD’s 5800X3D and 7800X3D are good choices. If your current system is AM4 then you can most likely upgrade to 5800X3D without changing anything else (check your motherboard specs).
The best CPU for WoW and for gaming in general atm is the AMD Ryzen 7800X3D.
WoW profits heavily from the extra CPU-Cache.
WoW does not need much VRAM, obviously with the cartoony grfx and low res textures.
Still for 4K and high refreshrates at settings 7-10 you will need a beefy GPU.
I would recommend a 7800XT or 7900XT for AMD GPUs and a 4070 TI or better 4080 for Nvidia (12GB VRAM is pretty low and not recommended for future proofing if you want to play modern games).
Can be SSD getting out of cache and/or close to full (where “close” isn’t a well-defined value). Also sometimes Nvidia drivers conflict with some other (usually audio) drivers.
