What is the cause for the game's gold inflation and rich-poor disparity?

It’s not hard to see that the difference between the rich and the poor in the game is too vast. The existance of a 5M vendor mount proves it. For some (very few) people it’s pocket change, others need an entire expansion of saving just hoping to get it. The positive feedback loop of group A buying tokens to sell them for gold to use the gold to buy stuff from group B who then buys a token with gold to have gametime.

Sure stuff are probably better now compared to stories I hear about WoD/Legion where people made tons of gold off of their mission tables and inflated the prices. But what are the real gold sinks we have in the game right now?

I’d like to hear opinions on the matter and if people think they can identify the root cause for this.

I do assume that the “poor” players are ones who have just the gold available to them and so they’re restricted to regular ingame gold income which is pretty much set in stone.

some people farm gold some dont

Except the rich people are the boosters and the AH goblins. Just like in life farmers are probably the poor guys.

well will be intresting how long it will take before bizzard adds a AH toy what works like a bligton with AH u click on for peoples with energeering can make one and mount becomes worthless. Yak expedition mount became now worthless when they added trasmog toy what energeering can make.

Just a time question when will it happen same with AH mount.

Few things:

  • WoD / Legion goldmines of garrison / Mission table where people had saved LOTS of gold.
  • Gold being criculated to few people that do “Boosts”, which in my opinion undermines any reason to progress with anything.
  • Gold farmers via botting/mb’ing. Programs generating gold literaly for players, just yestewrday I logged for like 30 mins in Nazjatar and seen two MB’s Druids flying like bots and picking flowers…
  • WoW Tokens. They are just legal way of buying gold with real world money.

To counter the gold whales and inflation the currency has to change from time to time.
Good time for that is like Horde reformation, where gold gets replaced by “Durats”, basically a switch of currency where everyone starts from the clean plate.

Without resetting the inflation, the gold sinks does nothing beside making the disparity even bigger between those that have gold and those that don’t.

sell rank 4 shadowlands legenderyes best moneymake ever …

I’m not sure how this works since I’ve never bought/sold tokens but honestly the game should take a cut from the trade (if it doesn’t already). That way a percentage of the gold circulated would leave the game.

Blizzard takes a cut out of $$$ instead the game talking in gold.
Meaning for a 10$ sub, token costs 15$ and can be interchanged for either gold or game time.

You buy a token, spend 15$ and post it on AH and in around an hour you get the gold specified on AH/Shop page as a current price. Nothing more, nothing less.

Basically those without gold but with rl money buy tokens for gold, spend that gold to buy boosts from those that (having gold) bought these tokens with gold via AH to play for free and have even more gold in the end.

Ofc it’s a hiperbole, but only those already buying tokens with gold (if they’re doing it right) and blizzard are profiting from tokens.

I personally just buy wow tokens when i need more gold, i do not work the AH, i do not do gathering or crafting professions, since they tend to be unrealistically unreliable. From experience, you need the gear level you want to craft to actually get the materials to craft the gear…it is less of a hassle to just buy the gear from the AH, when they don’t overcharge like alot of them do.

if you are geared and a good raider you are automatically rich cause you can join in on booster raids where they send you gold every month to your mailbox and all you do is do the same fight over and over again. i know many people like that.

Capitalism.

Except that I boost and still don’t have 80 million spread over my account like some of my friends that played wod and legion lol.

Boosting a 15 barely gets you 20k for 20+ minutes of “work” atm

Not really news here, but multiboxers who collect crafting materials are the ones who make the most gold in the game.

Though most people who actively seek to make gold, might be playing the auction house to buy items cheap and sell them more expensive than they cost. What most are targeting are binds when equipped max level gear which are relevant to the current patch. Sometimes you can make hundreds of thousands of gold in a month, sometimes not so much. But of course it depends on your server, what the demand is and how big the competition is.

its like IRL

some people know how to make money - some only know how to spend money .

making gold is super easy - it just requires 1 think - buy cheap sell more expensive later. nothing more.

for me the best market were always BoEs - snipe cheap for 200-300k sell for 500-1 mln .

people dont even notive how much raw gold they get passively - for example i got almost 4 mln gold just in BfA passively from fooling around on alts . it stacks up over the course of 2 years of expansion if you dont spend it on silly stuff like consumables , enchants , flasks etc .

granted that i sub by paying with normal cash not with gold.

For me it was the Garrisons in WoD. I don’t actively farm gold, but the missions in my garrison gave me up to 5M gold.

Not really.

The game is 15 yrs old. If you are a real veteran you have so many stuff from the past that even with new xpac addiction, you sit on a lot of gold anyway. Especially if you banked in the good times.
I mean, in legion between the AH on the app and a few good farming spot, i was able to play free with tokens for months on, despite limited playtime.
Not to mention all the people who saved rare items and transmog that now sells for tons of gold.

It’s not just goblins and boosters, normal people can be rich too.

You just answered your own question, there.

It seems to me that most people aren’t interested in accumulating gold. I regularly see people saying they’ve never had more than a couple of hundred K. Anyone who actively wants gold can easily farm more than that, even with the most labour-intensive farming methods.

The gap between rich and poor in WoW is mostly about not caring about having much gold.

Yeah, if you don’t pay rent, electricity water or food you have more money in your bank account at the end of every month :face_with_monocle:
