I’m just trying to apply a rule, and asking this question creates the high risk that some people will use this is a way to humble brag about at what low ilvl they managed to do it, but I’m more interested in more realistic numbers for the average player.
Why do I ask this question? Because I’m not a mythic+ enthusiast, I don’t mind doing it, it’s sometimes a bit of fun to do maybe once or twice a week, but I rarely have the energy or interest in doing it 4 to 10 times a week. (despite having scored the mount achievement in the seasons I was actively progress raiding).
I want to have a smooth experience when making groups or queuing up for them.
Maybe there is a site out there somewhere that tracks the average ilvl per succesful cleared mythic+ dungeon or such? Maybe there is a general rule that can be applied like: “3 item levels lower than what the chest rewards gives?” - stuff like that.
Thanks for anyone with an insightful answer.
In my experience of applying to groups you have to be i.e 255 for a +2. Keystones irk me enormously due to the players always wanting someone a gorillion ilevels over. Heaven forbid you’re at the threshhold or 3-4 points above it. Forget joining then which thus perpetuates the lack of experience and gearing.
It’s a vicious cycle of sweaters who want the top 0.01% to join their keystones which only widens the gap between the elitists and not-so-hardcore.

The gear doesnt matter much for lower keys if u know what to do there. 250+ should be enough for 15s but ofc pugs will want more

It might also just be a role imbalance or system issue.
Even when I with the most chill mindset created a group for mythic +2 a few days ago it only took about 10 seconds before I had more than 30 DPS signing up. Obviously the chances of getting picked as a DPS then when there are already a handful of people with ilvl ~270 signing up becomes very slim.

I’ve had it happen to me personally, so yes. Maybe they just didn’t want a warlock, who knows. But when I see several “Your application to +2 whateverdungeon has been declined” despite at the time being 243 it made me raise my eyebrows. So forgive me if I over-exaggerate but that’s how keystones feel to me. Unless you’re at the very top of doing content then chances are you won’t get picked. I’m 256 now and I know I’ll still get declined in a vast majority of them.
Unless you make the group of yourself.
Obviously, and that is what I do right now, also being in luck that I play as a tank most often and have a pocket healer. I just want to make it easier for myself by having a ballpark estimate for what ilvl I should be for every keystone level, because I’m a lazy casual and don’t want to try-hard too much.
thats nothing to judge it by though. some dungeons get 40-80 people applying in like less than 2-3 mins so its very likely that you just werent picked because there were simply so many dps applying.

i d say if you have 5-10 item level lower than what drops the dungeon is well completable, depending on your score/experience.
that being said, if you want a smoother run, invite people with higher score or item level.

Up to +15 the item level that drops in the dungeon or even a little bit below is probably a good pick. Above that, you look more at their score, covenant, tier etc.
First off you don’t need to be 260+ for a +15 the biggest problem why some classes have an easier time getting invited is the class and spec imbalance atm. As a Bm hunter you even can be 265 they won’t take you Over a fury warrior even if he is 10 ilvls lower reason his AoE is broken tbh. Same with destrolocks now they are so good atm other classes that are low tier will have a big problem to even get invited so ye it’s a imbalance issue and I even don’t get why blizzard doesn’t even try to fix it.
i got ksm at about 259 ilvl
You don’t need to, but if you want a smooth run without all group memebers necessarily playing at peak performance it’s probably a good pick for a requirement. People make mistakes. Players around the +15 level don’t play their classes perfectly. The gear helps with that.
Euhm don’t generalis that players who do +15 don’t play their class good I mean there are good players that only do +15 and don’t go higher because there isn’t a reason only if you want 278 conduits there is. Not that 278 conduits will do much.
Mistakes that result in the key not being in time or people leaving etc. are not mistakes that can be alleviated by gear in most cases. Like, it wouldn’t matter what kind of gear the tank had in the necrotic wake I tried to do on my priest, I got murdered at stitchflesh because I got aggro and he wasn’t picking it off me. We wiped as a result of that, twice and then people left.
I kind of saw it coming after he broke my shackle on amarth and we almost wiped there, luckily I chastised before we got blown to pieces.
I’ve had lots of keys where we easily could’ve timed the thing if people simply did more damage, over the years of playing the game. Having that additional damage means you can recover from a wipe on a boss for mechanical reason, too.

cool some peeps did in 245 and? )
Lol at 15s. You see many bots even at 19s today due to double lego and tier set. Its insane how many seriously bad people shouldnt even be at that range but they do. I have seen resto shamans at 20s not interrupting or dps standing at traps or random dmg taken, getting cleaved, or knocked out of dos platforms.

Pretty much all the fails I’ve had have been down to people messing up basic stuff from the bosses or disconnects. Sometimes it’s even trash stuff they mess up, especially shadow well or they pull 2-3 packs with healing gorms in mists when we have a party with a mage and boomkin and we wipe because I go oom eventually and the mobs just aren’t dying because nobody can interrupt.
