it’s really the thing that I didn’t really practice outside of “Legion” at the time but without really being interested in it more than that
and when playing on classic it’s incredibly useful the smallest potion / food / enchantment and other can save my life and make a big difference in damage i deal
but here on retail I have the impression that this is no longer the case at least outside of raids (when I played Legion) I have the impression that it has become completely useless
Professions are very useful for crafting items, they have retained their use for buff food, enhantments, potions, flasks etc, the usual consumables.
Changes coming in TWW (still in testing)
The work order system allows you to be able to commission skilled crafters to make items for you that are otherwise BoP, items can be upgraded depending on what kind of end game activities you take part in.
All professions are laborious to level up and require and extraordinary amount of effort often making a lot of players just ignore it. Very alt unfriendly and most likely will remain that way in TWW.
Tailoring, LW, JC and BS - only viable for very short periods each season and only useful for limited gold making unless you want to spend your life farming rare or expensive mats and pray to RNGesus for those very low drop Raid/Dungeon/fishing recipes.
Engineering - useful mainly for your own character and has a ton of utilities you can craft. Very little to potential to turn a profit and often a gold sink to level up.
Inscription - very little to offer and could be considered practically useless - at least in my opinion.
Alchemy, Enchanting, Cooking - still have their uses and can be considered the only viable professions to sink time into and can be seen as gold spinners.
Herbalism, Mining, Fishing - Very lucrative at the start of the expansions until the boundless bots in the game tank the AH prices often selling for less than a vendor will buy from you.
Professions seem to only serve those that are not really interested in M+ high keys or Mythic Raiding and are happy to remain at mid ilvl.
Professions are good if you play from the start of the season-expansion since with the new lvl up systems that requires a lot of time to catch up with any others or even invest for yourself.
As a new player there is no more lvling up with the profession of your choice ( Up to Mist of Pandaria ). And professions are only worth for current lvl part of expansion .
Making money is quite easy if you understand the Ah and know what people use-need.
Alchemy is quit profitable ( can easily make even up to half million per day especially on reset days with flask-potions )
Another decent is the enchant/leatherworking / jewel crafting , but due the limited gear slots it isn’t the same as alchemy. (There are other like blacksmith and inscription but they are quite poor= my opinion )
Ending Herb/Mining are very good , apart from the skinning skinning . Those are the gathered proff that you just auction the items ( very profitable with Herb>mine>>>>>Skinn. )
At the end right now just wait for the next expansion less than 2 months … The prices have dropped dramatically that investing right now is a loose .
It is fine, except for the gathering professions. Gathering is done for… There is no worthy profit anymore. They are useful if you still love to collect your materials for crafting, which lets you make more profit, but if you are a person like me who would earn token gold by gathering in old expansions, that’s not the case anymore.
wow lots of answers who… answer all the questions I had.
I don’t plan to get rich, I mean focusing on auction doesn’t really interest me. This is purely for personal use.
I thank you all for taking the time to respond to me with your arguments.
Last stretch of reaching it to 100 was a pain, had to rely on Dark Moon Fair’s professions’ quests to increase it further.
What really sucked in DF are the Knowledge Points to put into specialisations… there’s quite a few recipes locked behind them. The issue is THERE’S NO CATCH UP FOR IT!!! It’s a painfully slow gruelling grind to get them Knowledge Points.
well to be frank, I don’t think I’ll invest in it since TWW is coming out soon I prefer to wait I think it’s " useless " for me to start right away since I’m coming back to the game at the end of the expansion.
Everyone wants some professions gear early on in each season to either get some embellished pieces like Elemental Lariat, Allied Wristguard of Companionship, etc. But even non-embellished pieces can be useful early on in the seasons to fill an item slot for which one got unlucky by not getting any drops.
High-end players won’t wear more than 2 pieces of crafted gear once they have all BiS gear later on in each season, but that’s fine. I think that profession gear’s power is tuned very well in Dragonflight.
That’s because the outdoor world in Retail is Disney Land. It’s trivially easy; nothing can hurt you. In M+ and raids, however, you do need food, flasks, and potions.
