And why does she do so little if she is supposed be bordering on god-like harnessing powers?
When I ask “what is she” I don’t care to ask about silly things like is she a “demon”, definitely not, but she is obvs something more than a normal elf, or hogger, perhaps even Elune in “mortal” form?
Please give your awesome lore theories and sorry if this is a replica post!
From what little I have learned from the lore she is super OP, in game kinda passive and annoyingly dull (likely due to people knowing her true power, and her trying to “save” cenarion), and developers not really sure what to do with her? (Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing!)
She has the same problem now as any character that is elevated so high on the powerscale. Malfurion, Thrall (less so after the whole super weird doomhammer thing) as well as all of the aspects for the most part.
They all have the superman syndrome where they are so powerful that they essentially take the stakes out of everything when they are involved cause they are “unbeatable” by normal standarts… So the only option is to either write them out in a way or just ignore them for now for the sake of what is happening.
As for what she is, my assumption is some sort of avatar (in the original sense of the word) a manifestation of a divine/godlike beings power. Think Avatar of Sargeras as an example.
It is difficult, characters like that have a place as a storytelling tool.
1 They can be used to elevate a character take Broxxigar the Red as an example:
His story was already that of a hero He got an axe blessed by Cenarius, sacrificed himself for the rest to escape and stood on a pile of dead demons and all that is great but actually landing a blow and wounding Sargeras himself is the thing that makes the reader go “holy crap.”
2 They can be used to enhance despair, for example at the start of Legion: The legion threat felt bigger simply due to characters like Thrall, Khadgar, Malfurion and so forth not being able to repell them, it sells the threat and severity of the situation.
3 Everyone likes to see a god bleed. At a certain point if these characters are so perfect so infallible and undefeatable that them actually failing means a lot, be it good or bad.
Take Anduin, he is as Lawful/stupid good as it gets if/when he stays from that established path for whatever reason it is going to be a big deal and I personally like to see that kind of stuff that shows that these people are in fact people and not gods, at least if it is told in a believable way
Now for all those it is debatable if Blizz can pull it off but for themost part these godlike characters have a place, there is only a problem if there is 1 too many which devalues the status (if everyone is a god noone is) and 2 they do not do anything forever for no apparant reason.
Characters like Bwonsamdi make me feel like they can direct the horde where an epic character can steer the entire faction in a strong direction, but I guess once more it’s an omnipotent character ruling the lore within that particular faction, how does Blizzard get away from this?
Well, in terms of the story right now, then she’s fighting to reclaim Darkshore and Teldrassil alongside the other Elves and Worgen.
That’s where the story timeline is set right now. And it’ll be set in that time point until Blizzard decides to move on.
The in-game storyline isn’t progressing every plot with every patch. That’s just not feasable. Blizzard tends to have a shifting focus. So with patch 8.1.5 the story pertaining to Jaina, Sylvannas, Baine, and so on, moved forward a lot.
Tyande is still fighting in Darkshore. And that’ll occupy her time until Blizzard moves the plot along further.
Yeah, that’s why we get the idiot ball 9/10 times. And for some reason we try to fight honorfully while the Horde who claims they have it don’t show it. Imagine if we just pushed directly towards Orgrimmar after Zandalar, no we are the perfect good guys. They should be allowed to grief… My question for Anduin would be: “Anduin, why do we keep showing mercy when it’s always the orcs or Forsaken starting wars against us? We had the chance to finally end it and you allow them time to grief?! Don’t you remember why we fight this war? To save Azeroth? Why don’t we push our huge naval and air advantage right now and attack Kalimdor?!”
To be fair the entire horde war campaign is every playercharacter and NPC just going “Makes sense to me!” In the Patrick Star voice and not questioning anything really.
I think the story means to communicate the notion that the Alliance doesn’t really have any forces to spare.
The distraction employed in Nazmir to avert the Horde’s attention from Dazar’alor is driven by illusion, because the Alliance simply doesn’t have enough troops to create two seperate armies.
We saw that in the cinematic with Saurfang in the prison cell as well. All the dead soldiers on the harbor…The Alliance is running on fumes, it’s army is depleted and what’s left of it is at the point of exhaustion after being in battle constantly since Legion now.
They have the Kul Tiran navy now, and that’s something, but it’s not enough. There’s no sizable army.
It’s that war of attrition narrative that Blizzard tries to focus on.
I agree with you until some points in 3) it seems like certain characters in the most recent times can’t “fail” or are “soft”, which reduce your points 1 and 2 to nil, if they can’t fail and are outrageously OP, despite their lack of action, what is there trueplace in the lore amidst us mere mortals?
I know I’m tracking back on myself in search for a question, thanks for replies
The entire campaign shows all but 2 leaders disagreeing with Sylvanas including all champions (well Nathahnos is a maybe now) and nobody stepping up. Except Baine, look at the meeting would have been the perfect moment to overthrow her. Rexar’s character? Ruined, he didn’t even have a reason to join and he wanted to just live in peace in forest. But suddenly he is warmonger who wanna kill Jaina for no reason except that Sylvanas says so. Hopefully Lillian will be one of the new Forsaken leaders, her chacrater is one the few that make sense. Also she doesn’t show mallice she just wanna be left alone unlike many other forsaken who just wanna kill the living for fresh bodyparts and new undead to join their ranks. But Rexxar, damn his char did a 180 with no good reason.
That is the second problem with these type of characters really, once the trigger is pulled, they lose that mystical unbeatable/infallable status and end up in this mire where it is very unclear what exactly they are and where they go.
Rexxar was the point where I lost my faith in Blizzard writing tbh. It was always shaky and super cliche but I was ready to suspend my disbelief to a certain degree. Rexxar was the character I liked the most in Warcraft and they have handled him so badly it hurt.
It was not the first time. Maiev in Legion pissed me off too but I was not invested into her character as I was in Rexxar.
What I initially meant to say was that both sides get a rather massive beating with the idiot stick in BFA it is not really an Alliance exclusive, it is pretty bad on both sides
Is it just an effort to re-raise interest in the elves then? (Seeing as current law/content is revolving around them?) If only Tyrande has the power to repel the current strength of the horde?
It’s an effort to tell more story pertaining to the Night Elves and move the plot along following the Burning of Teldrassil.
I mean, chapter 1 was The Horde invading Darkshore. The War of Thorns event and the short stories covered that.
Chapter 2 is now, with Tyrande becoming the Night Warrior and the Elves retaliating, trying to reclaim their land.
Eventually Blizzard will move on to chapter 3 in that story.
Is there any lore to suggest she wouldn’t become corrupt by power? History repeats itself! (I constantly ask about lore I don’t know about cause it interests me :D)
