I originally started out as paladin, on a private WOTLK server. My co-worker asked me if I want to play wow together with his guild, and I said sure. I picked paladin because I was always leaning towards the goody-two-shoes type of classes, and while I did have an interest in other classes as well (I always leaned towards spellcasters in RPGs) they didn’t have the class available in the races I want to play, so I put it aside.
When I joined retail back in WoD I still stick to paladin as a main, but I also began leveling a monk alt on the side. I found Windwalker’s playstyle incredibly fun and satisfying so I got more attached to the character, and as a result began performing better on him.
Legion brought a slight change. I still kept my paladin, but I had to roll over to retribution because a DPS friend of mine wanted to tank, and our main tank said outright that he cannot and will not DPS, so I was told to swap.
Paladin remain my main character until Uldir, where on a lot of fights I had to sit out progression due the inherent flaws of the class (we had a stable tank duo already, and paladin wasn’t performing well enough to warrant bringing two into the raid, and retri was melee in a pretty melee unfriendly raid). At that point I leveled up a hunter to use on progress fights which were anti-melee (fetid devourer) and I also kept my monk leveled on the side (mistweaver, which was a really good pick for G’huun).
After Battle of Dazar’alor I was asked to stay on my hunter as a main, and my paladin and monk stay as an alt for fights where we needed a tank. By Ny’alotha I was getting bored of hunter gameplay, and vulpera was announced to become playable in 8.3, so I decided this is the time for me to give a try to mage.
I have been maining mage up until now. The only reason why I am not maining him now is because my guild went through a restructuring near the end of SoD, and my guild leader asked me if I can tank for the raid group instead. My monk is my main since then.
I was also playing a warlock on Alliance side.
Why I went through all these characters? I like both paladin and monk because they are the perfect type of hybrids imaginable (if only their melee spec would be ranged instead). They can both tank and heal, which I like doing, and I have the option to DPS on them if that is needed.
Hunter was an important stepping stone for me to transition from melee to ranged gameplay. It was pretty simple to play, but still allowed me enough freedom to do raid calls and handle mechanics without losing out on too much DPS. Mage I like for its versatility, and Fire provides a gameplay that so far no other class was able to replicate. Your burst phases are fast paced, and getting a perfect combustion rotation in is always satisfying.
Warlock I like too for the large amount of utility they have, on top of being extremely tanky. My favored spec is currently gutted in PvE right now (Affliction) so that soured my opinion of him.
With cross-faction available I think I am just going to stick with my mage and my monk as main characters.
