What main should I pick in SOD?

I understand that stuff is changing constantly, but I’m appealing to anyone who has decent knowledge of Classic Era overall or just the last two phases and might be able to guide and influence me towards a decision.

I want to be GOOD and PVP and have a spot in PVE. PVP to me is more important than PVE. What’s a good class to go for? I normally pick warrior on era, but apparently they’ve been a bit scuffed for the last two phases.

I’m not a very confident Tank. I would have to do a LOT of work in order to get good at it, though I can easily tank a DM on a Warrior (I’ve done it several times).

Melee always feels better to me (I like when you can FEEL a melee weapon upgrade) but I’m open to casters. I have a level 50 Mage on WOTLK and it’s fun just casting Blizzard and watching chaos unfold.

My favourites on retail are: Demon Hunter, Survival Hunter, Frost Mage, Elemental Shaman and Arms/Fury Warrior.

My favourites on WOTLK are: Elemental Shaman, Survival Hunter and Arms Warrior.

My favourites on era are: Elemental Shaman, Combat Rogue and Arms Warrior.

I’d appreciate any advice as to what to go for and I hope I can join this journey with you shortly (on Lava Lash!)

Mage should be the safest pick:
Top PvE dps, huge convenience with teleports and making your own water/food, top grinding (whatever) class and they do well in PvP.

As a bonus, it is highly unlikely you will ever have waves of clueless bots making threads to ask for the class to be nerfed, as mage (it is overall accepted), at this point, to do things no other class could could get away with.

Easy pick really.

To check all boxes:
Make a dwarf priest!
Play it healer with SP off spec. Both solid in pvp and pve.
You will ask why dwarf?
Because it is not most-important but most usefull.
Have fear ward
Have stoneform:While active, grants immunity to Bleed, Poison, and Disease effects. In addition, Armor increased by 10%. Lasts 8 sec.
Very strong in pvp and usefull in pve.
Peace!

Mages have always been a safe pick, they normally do very good. I also love spriest atm and ppl dont say no taking a spriest it seems like thanks to the VE buff so they can help out with healing.

I would recommend that but if you wanna try healing aswell priest in general is a very strong pick aswell and also mages seem to do good with their healing runes now in p2 if you like to do damage while healing kinda gameplay.

When it comes to melees, war and rogues are left behind a bit, even if my main team we have both a rogue and a warrior and its not a problem at all, many pugs do not take those classes.

Druid is doing fine too, everyone wants a feral druid with them due to the WF buff even if their damage is a bit scuffed. If you wanna switch it up resto and balance are also really strong.

Hey Haldir, the most important thing in classic like realms, that you pick a class you are confortable playing atleast two spec. Not all specs are viable on era and on sod, and even worse we dont know what will be viable and what not. But all classes are viable. For example Spriest was horrible in p1 but Hpriest was/is the best healer. If you dont like tanking i would advise you to go caster/healer (mage, priest) route. We dont know which specs will be viable next phase, picking a hybrid you most likely will have good spot both in PVE and PVP for the whole season. For me I picked paladin because i love both prot and ret specs, and I was going prot p2 because that way i was able to get gear.

If you want to be extremely OP in every phase just pick priest.

Priest is a mandatory pick for PvE.

Priest is the only win condition in pvp.

Priest is the best dps and best healer in stv event.

And the sod team have a very cringe priest bias. They are determined to make sure priest is wastly superior to every other class in every phase.

If you want to be op forever and never have to fear the nerf bat. Pick priest.

Thanks for all the responses, I’m glad I asked now!

This is really good advice, actually and helps me realise that Rogue and Warrior are probably not my best personal pick anyway, as I only like Combat and Arms.

Warlock whining about class balance is funny af ,did you check wowlogs lately your class is all over gnomeregan

Yes, but to be there one is required to have skill, which the person you replied to has issues with.

Whatever you like. Everything is viable, if you raid with a chill group of people literally no one cares what you play as long as the roles are filled.

if you plan to join a guild everything is viable.

if you are planning to pug raids then I would go for shaman. they are strong and will be always wanted in melee groups, best melee at the moment. Or warlock they will be awesome next phase and they will be needed for curses. Or any healer/tank class and feral on ally side gets a grp all the time.

For pvp horde is on winning streak, but facing long queues near to 20min. Allys are loosing with instant queues.

Solely for STV event go mage or ret, both if stacked doing above 1000 coins every run.

Who cares about PvE? Gnomer is super easy. The bosses crumble no matter what classes you bring.

Warlock is F tier in pvp rn…

Don’t listen to this guy. Shamans are never good for long, the default state is a subpar class, the only purpose of which is to enable to fun of yellows and browns. Furthermore if ferals don’t get buffed you’ll be forced to totem twist in the future, which other than being horrible gameplay will be a rather substantial DPS loss. Don’t make a shaman.

lets be real is there any better melee to get a spot in pug right now?

Let’s be real, there’s probably less than a month left of this phase. The next raid won’t be mechanical, which in itself is a massive buffs to rogues and warriors, who are currently doing really, really well on the non-mechanical bosses in Gnomer. The guy wanted something that’ll be good in the future, and I doubt that’ll be shaman. I’d like to be wrong, but I’m fairly certain shamans have peaked already.

I mentioned next phase, death coil+ crits on dots incoming it will be pretty good, also corruption and stamina or better drain life for destro/soul links locks.

maybe they will be good, but right now I would not recommend playing a warrior to anyone. wars will be eventually good, but playing it now? not really good choice to start sod with.

Next phase sure. Anything can happen.

Current phase though. Warlock is by far the worst pvp class.

If I disregard my own preferences I probably woulnd’t recommend any kind of melee. Blizzard will likely alter the lvl 60 raids to make them more difficult, and difficulty in their minds is often anti-melee mechanics. So maybe a mage, warlock or a priest. These also have the benefit of being able to fill more than DPS roles, as either healers or tank. OP did mention ele shaman, which could be a good option for the same reason. But I doubt it will be as strong as the other three.

Mage is by far the easiest class to level and is exceptional for gold making and you can heal and do epic dps.

But you could also make a rogue on Wave the ret paladins server and spend your time sapping him. Never kill him. They would be too OP. But if you do kill him. Make sure you ONLY use mutilate.

My biggest recommendation is the trolling Wave one on rogue.

If you’re pugging though I would 100% recommend priest. You would have to be naked to not get an invite
