I’ve been trying to decide what class to play for a while, but I’ve been stuck deciding between how a class plays and what it’s theme/fantasy is.
For example, I like how rogues play but they don’t really use much magic. I like how mages use lots of flashy magic and stand out, but I’m not a big fan of playing a caster. It’s a tough decision because both elements of a class matter a lot but I’m not sure what would be best in the long run.
When you guys choose a class, do you choose based on how it plays and how all the different specs feel, or do you choose what looks cool to you and you can immerse yourself in?

With BFA and prior, if you’re looking for a certain type of game play you’re forced to pick yourself a class and spec and never change from it. That sucked a lot.
I like the fantasy of the class, but BFA and prior forced me to choose specifics over the general fantasy idea.
I suppose I can always imagine my character being a versatile warlock or whatever when in reality she is just an afflict warlock with almost zero versatility.

All matter , i think the question is what are your priorities .
For me it’s : Class game play ( abilities , synergy , difficulty )
Class fantasy on 2nd place , i do like a good story and when i created some of my tunes i looked at class fantasy like Dk really liked it .
I go for fantasy first then gameplay, since even if a class I like isn’t that fun to play it beats playing a class I don’t like for the sake of playing because I won’t have fun anyway.
Granted, that’s a bit weird because a class SHOULD be fun to play yet I somehow can’t bring myself to play certain classes because I just don’t like them.
Well… Gameplay is somewhat linked to fantasy anyway. Mage is a ranged caster and warrior is a melee smasher. Still I would always pick fantasy over gameplay.
I kinda want ranged spec tho~
Both matter to me equally.

The latter, for the most part. But it overlaps.
In fantasy games I tend to err toward magic. And I also happen to prefer ranged gameplay.
So the choice is often straight-forward, because the ranged magic-user is often a staple in most RPGs - be it a wizard, mage, sorceress, priest, warlock, or what have you.
I often choose one thinking i’d like it based on its fantasy and then realize it’s dead boring to play.

Any class/spec that doesn’t feel like it fits for me I don’t play it.
Any class/spec that don’t play fun for me I don’t play it.
For example, WoD is hailed as one of the best expansions for sub rogues, but to me it sucked extremely hard and I didn’t play sub because I disliked the way it played/it’s theme.
If I like a class though I’ll stick to it no matter what, for example I love arms warrior, I insanely hate the dot class that it has become, however I still am playing it from time to time because I just love the warrior class.
I think what matters the most should be is do you like the class, and then do you like how it plays.
I like demon hunters, but they just felt off for me, and afaik they are just a 2 button class ( I didn’t play a DH at max level, just heard it from other DHs )
I love demo warlocks but for the life of me I hate the imps and warlocks revolving around summoning a lot of them, if I could glyph the imps to be other demon types I’d probably main warlocks, even though I don’t really like the gameplay that much ( it’s fun just doesn’t fit my style )
For outlaw rogues, I absolutely hate the living thing out of them, I’m still salty we lost combat to a pirate themed spec, however my love for rogues made me play them especially since the way assassin works and the theme of sub atm sucks but I could only get so far before quitting rogue all together.
You should consider that no matter how good a class/spec plays and even if it’s meta and you perform insanely well with it, you might still hate it’s theme and eventually quit, so don’t take that risk if you value class fantasy.
My first character was chosen because of Class gameplay ^^
I choose a priest cause back then people hated to heal and there was a high demand on healers ^^ i wanted something that people actually “needed” and priest it was. At the same time i wanted a class that could do ranged dps.

Although I may initially be attracted to the fantasy of a class, it’s the gameplay that keeps me playing.
When I started back in October 2005 me and my real life friend were chosing a class for me to start WoW.
I went for class fantasy.
Having tried Diablo 2, the only class that attracted me was the Amazon.
Naturally when starting WoW I wanted something similar.
Amazon’s can use ranged weapons, shields, javelins, spears, summon a Valkyrie.
They can use leather or heavy armor depending on your talent choice
Dexterity, to increase your ranged damage or strength, to be able to equip heavier armor.
Unfortunately the closest I got was the Hunter class, which had pet management.
I still play a Hunter, among other 3 classes, I play at level 120, because of the ranged weapon fantasy.
Cheers.
I thought it was fantasy but I learned gameplay was more important. I mained a monk for ages (tank) as the class theme is great for me. Then I tried a warrior and Dk tanks, I vastly prefer how they play, and I play them more now.
Class fantasy is important, but turns out how I do it is what keeps me from getting bored.
I don’t really understand what you’re saying. You want to play a melee class but they don’t use magic but you don’t want to play a magic class because they are casters…what?
Fantasy doesn’t matter if gameplay sux
Basically this. Doesn’t matter how visually or thematically dazzling a class is; if it plays like a garbage truck in a hurricane, you’re not in for a good time.
It’s a question of what should matter more; gameplay or fantasy. It is best for someone to choose a class based on how it plays, or based on it’s theme/fantasy.
Doesn’t a class play according to its theme?
It’s gameplay for me.
If the gameplay is bad, what’s the point in the class fantasy. The latter becomes redundant.

To me, it’s worse than that. If the class fantasy is on point, a broken gameplay can be outright infuriating. Seeing that kind of potential being wasted is just the worst.
