I’ve recently started playing World of Warcraft again and I’d love to read the novels, but I don’t know which order I should read them in. Can anyone let me know the best order, please?
Honest question, why do so many people suggest the Chronicles? If you just want to read factual information, you can also read Wowpedia articles.
The Chronicles have their own merit, they have beautiful artworks, maps, and they take the latest retcons into account, which is very helpful… but they’re not as fun as a good novel like Rise of the Horde or the War of the Ancients books.
EDIT
Also, on topic, if you have some background about WoW lore you can read the novels however you want, but if you don’t, it’s best to stick with the chronological order while skipping the less important ones. For example, The Last Guardian is absolutely vital to read, while Wolfheart is only important if you’re interested in Gilneas, Varian, Garrosh, and the War in Ashenvale.
And they cost around 90 euros, if you get all three (and let’s be honest, you’ll have to) . Unless I were a really dedicated beginner, I wouldn’t seriously consider them.
I have to agree with Haiete that Chronicles aren’t that good entry to the Warcraft Lore. Yes, they are backbone of the current lore but they aren’t exactly page turners.
Personally I would recommend:
Rise of the Horde
The Last Guardian
Warcraft: Tides of Darkness and Beyond the Dark Portal
Arthas: Rise of the Lich King
Jaina Proudmoore: Tides of War
World of Warcraft: Illidan
Those are my favourite novels in Warcraft and most of them can act as pretty good springboard to the lore because they’re actually interesting reads.
Thanks everyone. I’m going to have fun reading all of these books. The chronicles do look cool. I’m highly tempted to get all three simply because the artwork sounds awesome.
