so i keep reading that for delves, solo content etc the best pets are by far clefthoofs. is this accurate or is this just overkill and spirit beasts are perfectly viable?
All families are perfectly viable, just play with what you want to. If you want to min max, run with an aqiri.
I use the core hounds, because I like them 
I don’t know if there’s a BIS pet or not.
A ferocity clefthoof is technically the “best pet” for solo stuff, but you can run pretty much whatever for most solo content outside of maybe level 11 delves mobs below that level don’t really pose much of a threat to pets
i use karoma and garra as my pets, and always will unless i need lust or do doing pvp where i use a direhorn

You know you can respec youre pets , so they all can have lust
