What race?

Okay guys i have been Roleplaying my Gnome mage for a while now and am thinking of joining the Horde. What race do you think would be best Lore and fun wise?

Tauren seem really nice to roleplay, although I have never done so myself.

Orcs can provide some neat RP if you cling to the identity of the old Clans, they could swing either way on Horde politics atm so that leaves room for creativity.

Trolls are a lot of fun, their belief in the Loa and of course the new Zandalari models are a big boon for them, plenty of potential there.

Blood Elves have a long history, several parts of their society could be interesting to RP, from Dragonhawk Riders to Farstriders or maybe even a Blood Knight!

Goblin RP is something I have never took part in but from Observation it seems really..unique. Not like anything any other race would offer.

As for Forsaken Rp, your characters past life offers a lot of potential and freedom, you could be from any of the seven kingdoms really. I imagine they would be loyalist considering the recent novel and Slyvanas’ actions.

What are you preferences ? What way did you RP your Gnome? What was she like? Perhaps stray as far away as possible from that kind of character to get a fresh experience!

Hands doon tha be da trolls, mon. They be ja’makin’ da voodoo an’ be ‘aving almost da most amount o’ lore in WoW.

So this is what they call it on Alliance side nowadays.

As to which race you should pick, I suggest goblins, if you wish to follow on the whole engineering theme and stuff.

I look at u suspiciously.

But in all seriousness, pick Forsaken. They’ve got interesting things coming for them.

If you like Gnomes and still want to RP a race connected to Gnomes in a sort of friendly/extremely violent rivalry, I do suggest Goblins.

To me I played Gnomes before Cataclysm but when Goblins came along they just felt so much more wilder and interesting, they have this certain special flavour to their RP which can make RP as Hordecentric or more detached and neutral as you want!

Alliance main here, but generally my horde recommendations would be Blizzard’s favorite: the orcs. Their lore is insanely fleshed out and they come in so many different flavours. There are so many clans to pick from and the orcs along with the humans are basically the only races in the game that do not boil down to stereotypes. You can roleplay almost any type of orc you can imagine without it being lore-breaking or seem like you’re trying too hard to be special.

But, my personal horde favorite is gonna be the blood elves. The elves in Warcraft are also very obviously one of Blizzard’s favorites, they have thousands of years of rich lore and they’ve played integral part in almost every single major event on the surface of Azeroth since the rise of mortal empires.

I also find their models/animations to be some of the best in the game. They also have wonderful architecture and gorgeous zones. I understand that this part is more subjective of course.

Another thing i find appealing about specifically blood elf roleplay is that they are quite pragmatic and not as prejudiced toward darker magics while still having fully embraced the teachings and practice of the holy light after the reignition of the sunwell. This presents the unique opportunity of roleplaying anything from a benevolent paragon of the light or a devious warlock dabbling in the fel while still leaving a lot of open doors no matter what path you choose.

Most other races have a pretty hardline stance on specifically dark sorcery which makes it so that if you for example pick a warlock, you’re gonna be more or less ostracized, but blood elves are no strangers to fel and their entire society used fel magic to a greater or lesser extent to sustain themselves after the loss of the sunwell. And sure, there will always be those who frown on such things, but less so in blood elf society.

Anyways, to summarize the blood elves; they are quite flexible in terms of roleplaying opportunities and they’re a very unique member of the horde.

Horde Pandaren.

No but seriously, what kind of stories are you interested in playing out? What is it that attracted you to Gnome RP? Are you looking for something entirely different to do something fresh? In which case pretty much any Horde race will do that job.

I think this is a more appropriate question to be honest. Decide on what type of class/spec/character you want to play before you pick race. That’s going to matter quite a bit since most of the different races have wildly different views on specific character classes and personality traits.

Trolls require you to talk funny all the time so it will get bothersome

NIGHTBOOOOOOORNE for that post-civil war upper-class feel.

So if you want to RP the French, essentially.

Male models are atrocious though :frowning:

Just like the French!

  • Orcs are interesting. They have been explored by Blizz with many layers on complexity and are basically this violent creatures with a spark of nobility within them, yet far from falling into a noble savage archetype: they are both ferocious and honorable (depends, but atleast they are meant to be). While usually bent on survival, we have seen them reach unusual levels of introspection. They have many arcs and sides that can be explored, from honor to redemption, from present (BFA) to their past, aswell as demonic ties.

  • Undeads. Unlike orcs, undeads lose that noble warrior or barbaric energy that embodies most of the Horde. They value suble and cautious attitudes, appear to disdain empathy etc. Their initial depiction makes them wicked and cruel: they believe their existence is a curse and the most painful memory of all is their past. And yet forsaken reject their past but still look at it with a sense pain and nostalgia. A minority among the forsaken seem to look forward to find back their lost humanity, but most seem content enough to backfire all that resentment and anger against the world. They can be introspective, although they usually prefer to just act in the world in many resentful ways, and this behavior hides a lot of depth. Whatever they do, you know one thing; being a forsaken means you create conflict wherever you go. Conflict means stories. Up until WotLk, they were likely my favorite horde race. An amazing race with many directions you can take.

  • Blood elves have an amazing background, an interesting story. I believe it is a bit of a shame so many people try to undermine their progress as a people (from dependent to Fel to this new relationship with the Light, which has yet to be expanded upon). It seems the blood elves already have themselves established as a nation (as a people, as a culture, etc) and don’t need to be as introspective as other races. “Pragmatic” is a term thrown around very often to describe the sin’dorei and I find it somewhat fitting to a good extent. Their more ‘spiritual’ side, if you want to call it like that, lies in symbols. Indeed, representation (of power, of social status, of well-being, but also of magic and religion) means a lot to the blood elves. Formality and social rites are meant to be upheld in all situations. They themselves aren’t very introspective: you don’t question your world as long as it works and if it doesn’t, you’ll find a way to make it work anyway: they don’t need to rethink themselves a lot, these type of changes usually come from above (Kael’thas with M’uru and the Fel crystals, and later Velen and M’uru’s sacrifice). A race of wit and skill, I’d argue. They also have a strong sense of community webbed with a materialistic but enlightened approach. I can see the appeal of this race, yet I find their attitude to be so impersonal. That being said, most of the interest elves can bring comes from their class-race combination, each one having its flavor (ranger/paladin/magister… they are all very different from one another).

  • Tauren are the silent yet idealistic heart of the Horde. They embody its nobility to the greatest extent. Usually in RP I’ve come across two types of taurens: spiritual and wise taurens or bodybuilder-types “I wreck everything” type of taurens. Story-wise, I believe their concept has been losing depth as time progressed, and now they’re this sympathetic but actually shallow image of Indian natives, devoid of a lot of authenticity, which is what taurens should be based upon. So… I think they can be interesting, but I believe their trope is somewhat stereotypical and superficial.

  • Goblins are object-oriented: machines, money, sex.
I have seen have a somewhat linear approach to their RP, and even characters represented are usually caricatures of human qualities brought to a comedic level. My opinion is that they are somewhat shallow or repetitive, working better as sidekicks or crafty mechanics. They can enhance a story, but usually there’s little to say about them as, unless you keep the story to a comedy-level, any attempt of them taking the central stage will make the story become very whacky. Imho, most goblins are forgettable and if you don’t believe me, you can always insert a goblin concept into another race and wonder: ie.
“Wouldn’t this be cooler as an orc?”

The list goes on but my suggestion is: think of what you’d like to do and what you don’t like to do, and then what opportunities are there to enact your character and go from there.

You want to have a traditional character or subvert expectations? What themes do you like, or you want to bet on this time? What themes you don’t don’t want to explore?
How do you think the community will be receptive to your concepts? What do they offer to the community? (this is important - a character has to offer something interesting!) Etc

Most of them probably are, though I imagine some of them may not agree entirely with Sylvanas, after what happened with the Desolate Council. They are probably just smart enough to keep their mouth shut.

I shall prepare the :white_flag:

You don’t have to type out the Troll accent, when I had a troll I didn’t use an accent.

Goblins, because there’s a wide array of characters and types to play, and the least amount of constraining racial lore/backstory. They also make for perfect blank slate / progression characters because of their goal-orientedness and constant upwards struggle.
