What should I do as a new player?

Hello,

Even though I technically did play the original World of Warcraft back in high school, when we had to go in with big groups of people and fight dragons in raids, I don’t really consider myself a returning player, since that was like 15 years ago.

I just bought the game, which came with a max level boost, I created a druid, which was also my favorite class back in the original game and now I am a bit lost as to what to do.

There is so much stuff everywhere, it’s a bit overwhelming to be honest.
I tried a couple of PvP matches, did some Halloween event quests and a dungeon too. Not sure now if I should start quests in that Boralus place where my boosted character started or if I should start from the beginning of the story.

I read about this feature that would let you go back to the past and experience the original story, but that Chromie NPC doesn’t say anything to me at all.

Any suggestions for what I should do for now (at least until the next story expansion launches)?

Cheers!

Heya Silvarelle,

Welcome back to the game! And congratulations on choosing the best class!

Just as a disclaimer: What you should do is highly dependent on what type of player you are, so I can only give some general recommendations here. Wow has an absolute ton of stuff to offer, which would be a little over the top for me to list out here, so the main callout I’ll make is around story, since you specifically mentioned that yourself.

First off, diving right in with a boosted character doesn’t help the feeling of confusion, so a good starting point, if at all viable for you, is to create a fresh new character (maybe another druid on a different spec?), so you’re eased into the experience a little more.

It’s recommended that you follow the current expansion’s story while leveling up the character. The next expansion’s storyline is to some extent tied into the current expansion (at least at a very rough level and with some characters carrying over), so it might help set the scene for Shadowlands if you experience the different zone narratives and war campaign of BfA.

If you’d rather go through it “chronologically” (keep in mind, this is a little chaotic too) then there is the “Chromie Time” feature which you mentioned. It basically gives your non-max level characters the opportunity to have an entire expansion scale to their journey from level 10-50, so that the leveling experience can be spent in just one expansion. At level 50, this is disabled, and you can freely go wherever you please (which is also why Chromie didn’t give ou any options).
Here’s some info on Chromie time:

That’s just a high-level overview on story content. Wowhead has a great overview of the main things that changed since Vanilla, so maybe something mentioned in there tickles your fancy?

If anything jumps out at you that you want to know more about, feel free to ask. Maybe it’ll help narrow it down a little

Happy exploring!

There has happened alot of stuff during the years.
If Chromie doesn’t talk to you, there has been reports about doing the first few initial quests in Boralus to make her speak. It is recommended to level up several characters if you want the most from playing the content using Chromie time. Going back at level 50 you will kill everything instantly, it would be purely for the stories. Leveling is ever so much faster now than it ever has been.

Welcome back!

Kerrosh gave a good answer. I’ll add some things.

Chromie Time is available only to characters in the levels 10-49. It is intended to give people a choice of where to level, but 50s can’t level any more, so it doesn’t apply to them.

We are in the limbo between expansions, the prepatch. Shadowlands will launch in three and a half weeks. Then you will have a very clear direction.

Meantime, you are getting the usual overload of information and things to do of BfA as if it were a new expansion, while it’s actually over.

Blizzard will be adding a prepatch storyline, probably starting Wednesday, with quests for you to do to get better gear and see the story that leads into Shadowlands.

You have made a great choice of Argent Dawn as your realm for Alliance.

For the rest of the prepatch, there are three basic things you could choose to follow:

  1. Make a new character at level 1, and level it through the world.

This has the advantage of introducing you to some of the basics in travel, trade, abilities, geography at a slower pace, and you can choose a second class and see how other classes work. Eventualy, all of us who stay do make other characters called “alts” to see the game in more than one way.

  1. Start on the BfA quests.

You can open up BfA, get a little gear and a little gold, learn the Flight Points, and see some of the story.

  1. Go exploring in lower expansions on your Druid

While level 50s are not eligible for Chromie Time, they can go everywhere at any time. You can do quests from any expansion. You can walk in and solo dungeons and raids from previous expansions - earning mounts and pets from drops there while you’re at it. You can earn Achievements, of which there are thousands.

In the circular mimimap top right of your screen, there is a magnifying glass icon. Click on that and tick “Trivial Quests” on. If you are exploring older expansions that means that quests thatare too trivial for a mighty level 50 will still be shown.

P.S. You should bookmark the websites

wowhead.com for quests, maps and items and
icy-veins.com for all about how to play your class

They will come in very handy.

Enjoy!

Please ask again if you have any more questions!

Hello all,

Wow, thank you very much for the informative replies!
I will check out those guides and websited you all linked to find out more about the game!

I don’t have too much of a problem with the boosted character, since it seems like this game is much easier than I remember and I have way less abilities than I used to have on my original game druid (maybe it’s because they split them up into specializations?). In any case, seems pretty simple to play so far.

I got a bit confused since I did not know where to start the story at the beginning - I tried going to the Night Elf world tree home, but it was all burnt up/destroyed for some reason, so I guess we are homeless now.

I am probably going to continue quests in Boralus for now until the new story launches. Maybe at some point later I will level some new character to use the time travel feature - too bad that doesn’t work for level 50 characters, would be awesome to experience what happened after Warcraft III with my druid; I hope Blizzard will change that at some point.

One last question: Do I need to worry about getting gear or doing anything specific now? Or is it all going to be obsolete with the new story that is coming?

Thank you again!

Teldrassil was burned at the start of BfA. I could rant about this, and I have, elsewhere, but I suppose this is not the place.

However, it still exists. In a different time. Characters below level 110 (45 after the squish) still see the original Teldrassil and Darnassus normally, and if you talk to Zidormi, who is on the road south from Lor’Danel in Darkshore, you can be phased into seeing it as a level 50. I’ve done that, so Teldrassil and Darnassus are still there for me, even at level 50. If they weren’t, I really think I would not have stayed.

Story-wise, the Night Elves who escaped from Teldrassil are homeless now.

If you’re following BfA quests, let me put in a word for starting Drustvar from the Harbormaster’s Office in Boralus. Great Blair Witch vibe, great storyline.

You don’t need to worry about gear. You might want to. I don’t know how hard playing BfA quests is when wearing boost gear. The World Quests, which you might see as circles on your map (I think boosted characters get those opened automatically) will give you some gear upgrades.

Probably later this week, we will see the start of the prepatch questline, telling the story that leads into Shadowlands, and those quests will reward ilevel 100 gear, which will give you a head start on Shadowlands, which is now scheduled for Nov 24.

Thank you very much, Grainne!

Sad to hear about us nightelves not having a home anymore.

I will see if I can find this Zidormi, since I would very much still like to visit Teldrassil for nostalgia - I used to love the atmosphere there and the music.
Seems like this game has a lot of time travel now, huh?

Thanks also for the tips about quests - I will look into visiting Drustvar - spooky atmosphere sounds nice!

I won’t worry too much about gear then, since I did not find anything too hard at this point, will just take it slow and enjoy the quests.

Thank you!
