what are you talking about? There is no sword in silithus. Just some bug mobs from vanillla

It’s a point around which there will be story in future. When the devs are asked about features for which story is planned, they pretend to act all confused. That means that they have something specific in mind to do with it in future.
If they don’t have anything specific planned, they just say something non-committal.
Maybe we’ll see happenings around The Sword next expansion.

To be fair the size of the sword is not consistent and the way it appears ingame it probably wouldn’t be life threatening for Azeroth. In the cinematic it looked like the wound would be the entire size of Silithus, not just a small area in the middle of it.
But, well, artistic license and what not.
