What's the most 'adventurous' Cloth class?

I have a select few ‘mains’: Paladin, Druid, and Hunter. These are simply my favourite classes in the game, both gameplay-wise but also thematically and aesthetically.

However, I feel like something’s missing without a Cloth user. Only problem is, I’ve never really fallen for any of them.

  • Warlock feels too ‘evil’ for my taste. I’m not really into demons, felfire and stuff.
  • Priest has an intereresting dichotomy between Light and Shadow going on, I can dig that. But I also feel like its spells are all way too samey. Every button is just a yellow or a purple splotch of colour. Also not very into the whole musical theme of Holy.
  • Mage is probably the one I’ve historically been most interested in, in part because it doesn’t really come with any inherently ‘sinister’ specs, but also because it has lots of cool flavour with portals and stuff. I’m still not too fond of the general caster playstyle; it feels a little stiff to just stand there and flick spells at your foes. But that goes for all three of the classes.

I think I wish there was a fourth Cloth user class, one which wasn’t a typical caster. Or perhaps simply new specs which interested me more.

But that said, if you were in my shoes, what race/class/spec combo would you pick as your Cloth main?

It has to feel ‘morally good’, look good, ideally be fast and agile with few buttons and lots of mobility, and come with some cool ‘adventurer’ flavour.

Well, Mages always look for knowledge, and so could be seen as adventurous as the travel far and wide to learn.

But then, what about a wandering cleric? A Priest out and about lending aid and healing to those who need it?

A Warlock can always get himself in trouble. It may be that he is off on an “adventure” as otherwise he’d be tried and executed by his homeland. He’s on the run with his pet imp. No home. No hearth.

just because they don’t look bad doesn’t mean all mages are good tho, even jaina had her crazy moments.i’d go with priest. today when i was doing some priest class hall qs one npc was talking about how one should not be working with void so i guess not all priests have a void side.

I’d say frost mage is your best bet of your actual choices, but don’t pick rune of power if you appreciate being mobile.

You literally answered it yourself. All the casters have to stand and cast and you’re not going to avoid that, so no point. Mage is the one you’re drawn to because of the reasons you state.

Go with your gut.

Also, frost can actually move quite a lot at higher levels. Once you learn how to play it and get enough talents you’ll find that almost every global is spent casting something that’s instant with Frostbolt mostly being for downtime. With Blink and Alter Time it is surprisingly mobile as well, but you need to be a little clever in how you use it due to Rune of Power and just in general in PvP.

I’m not currently aware of any mage that doesn’t dislike Rune of Power. I certainly do.

  1. It covers up ground effects that can kill me
  2. It ruins my mobility
  3. Bosses just love putting mechanics on it after placement. Yes, I do try to optimize to avoid this but sometimes that’s just not possible.
  4. I can’t use blink to get out of these problems, it’ll TP you too far. So now I’m sitting there minutely optimizing your position while losing DPS.
  5. The size of the rune’s power does not actually equal its visual size. I need a weakaura to make sure I stand in it while also not standing on it because of what I said in the first point of this list - standing on it can kill me.

It’s just an annoying, stupid spell.

I think most mages have just kind of accepted that it’s there and that it’s annoying. And everyone who couldn’t just rerolled, which is likely a big part of the reason there are so few of us these days compared to what it used to be.

But you can just switch to Incanter’s Flow. It’s not as good, but it’s quite liberating.

I’m also least excited about cloth classes. Warlocks are my least-played class in WoW, and I also haven’t played mages and priests much.

I leveled up a vulpera mage recently because my raid team might need me in that spot. The mage specs seem OK, but having to play with Rune of Power is a little annoying. Also, Fire’s Sun King’s Blessing talent, which is a must-pick, is clunky to play with. But Frost seems alright.

Priests got a lot of good changes lately, but mages seem to have been forgotten by Blizzard. Mages and Demon Hunters probably got the fewest class design lately. But maybe they’re next up for review soon after the 10.1 launch.

Warlock? Me???
No sir, I’m just a humble archeologist, a cute little fox
