Where can I check whether guild name is ok?

So recently i had various issues with my names being flagged for rename as offensive so i just decided to ask GM whether guild name “Based Department” would be ok. One GM claimed its offensive :

Based Department is possible that it would be ok but as it is more of an insult than a neutral connotation it is possible this could get actioned as well.

Other one when i asked how is it offensive answered me to basically google it  :

I understand that you had a question about the advice given on the names here, specifically Based. Without stepping over the line of a GM and providing an indepth analysis of any of the terms you wanted to use, a simple google search of the term “based” would yield a lot of results just on the first page to illustrate sort of how polarizing it can be.

I have been here a while and have played this game even longer than that. In every single guild name chose I can say that if it hit any one GM’s desk it would likely get penalized. This is because we are using the same internet that you are, and it doesn’t take many seconds to figure out where any of these guild titles lead to whether if you’re being cheeky, literal, or metaphorical for any of them.

That said the question you asked was why the name BASED DEPARTMENT would be flagged. The simple answer is because you’re playing with the term “based” and if you want to figure out why that’s a not-so-wise-choice then I Invite you to do some research on it online.

So as a patient guy I did that and heres what i got:

Wiktionary:
Adjective. based (comparative more based, superlative most based) Founded on; having a basis; often used in combining forms.

Urban Dictionary:
Agreeable. Admirable. Worthy of support.
Often used in contexts where the action or opinion ignores popular trends and social conventions or requires special effort.

So the final answer i got was:

As we have mentioned before, we are not here to discuss hypothetical situations regarding if a name is appropriate or not. Our stance on names can change over time and we reserve the right to restrict offending accounts as much as necessary to keep Blizzard games a fun experience for all players. If you feel like a name might be considered inappropriate, I would recommend to err on the side of caution and choose a different name.

And here I am with my patience completly lost. I feel like im being played on. Firstly they use flawed logic to disapprove my name and in the end they actually say “oh its not our job to tell you whther its ok or not but we can ban it if we decide so”. I feel like You just wasted plenty of my time writing all these tickets in vain and making me even more confused. In the end i even asked the GM about such an inoffensive and peaceful name “We Love Diversity” and they couldn’t answer on that. What the hell is going on?

Just use the name, and don’t go around telling people “Based” everywhere(Assuming the guild is on AD) because my guess is you’ll get flagged for that, otherwise i think you should be fine

Oh, the guild is by no means on AD nor any RP server, its just the char I used on forums.

i personally dont see a problem then with the name, but i understand you want to know for sure that its ok to use it, if anything, even if they flag your guild name for a rename, its not a serious name that will earn you a ban.

I don’t either… I can’t see how Based Department is in any way offensive or otherwise taken in a negative manner. How very odd…

Or maybe because the phrase “Based Department” is a popular meme based insult used on 4chan. Which I suspect you know full well. Stop trying to be an edgelord (someone who seeks to be edgy)

No it’s not an insult per se, that has 0 logic.

I’d never heard it, but then I don’t 4chan. Now I have googled it, I understand why.

i dont really care how people labeled adjective “based” on some god forsaken website. This whole thing reminds me of people getting banned for mentioning a certain race in wow while there are several npcs of that race called slavemasters, witches and they even have their own dungeon called slave pens. If we are to take into account how people use certain words on the whole internet we WILL end up forbidding every single word.

It’s not really about what you care about. Blizzard agree the term should not be used as a guild name and after reading the google results, I would hope you could see that it is not a good choice either. Unless of course you want your guild associated with being far right believers.

Thats entirely irrelevant if you care or not, because Blizzard DO care, and their game, their rules.

well sure you are totally right its their rules but they contradict themselves. One GM said it probably wouldnt be allowed the other one said its not their role to judge hyphotetical cases. So im asking you in all honsety how am i supposed to know what is allowed and what is not. Ive been blasted with links to “rules” and ToS but they are so vague its insane. this is the reason i ask them for opinion and they give me back mixed answers / avoid them at all (had to ask several times what is wrong to get “google it” answer, did not get ANY answer on “we love diversity”)

I’d say, come up with a guild name. Google it, see if it has any connotations that may be distasteful, if there are, avoid it, if not… good to go. I have to be honest in that “Based Department” is not an everyday use of those two words. I can’t personally believe that this name was used in pure coincedence as it is just not a gramatically used phrase. So with all due respect, I have to agree with Trovalak in that it was used knowingly, that’s the bit you need to avoid.

Ok, thanks for the insights in any case, im gonna wait a bit. maybe i can get some more details.

Exactly. It made no sense to me. Now I understand.
Maybe just try not to be edgy and choose a name that a) makes sense and b) has no bad connotations after googling.

It seems to me you’re wanting to pick a fight with GMs for no reason.

ok ill adjust to that unwritten rule “has no bad connotations after googling.” and ill stick to “We Love Diversity”.
