I’m not looking for the obvious answer “Coldarra” here. I thought about pocket dimensions in WoW and my focus turned to the Eye. I didn’t find much on the wiki, so any information/speculation would be appreciated. Was it somehow conjured up by Malygos? Is it physically somewhere within the Nexus?
It’s probably a pocket dimension, if any being can make them easily it is(was?) the Blue Dragons.
Is there any more lore available on this kind of magic anywhere?
In Legion Archmage Xylem went to the Eye to wreck the Ley Lines.
So it is probably a dimesion that is connected to all of Azeroth’s Ley lines, way for Malygos to control the magic on Azeroth while it was still his duty.
After some reading I noticed that it seems like that Eye of Eternity almost seems to be like a dimension or location where he tries to suck in all the magic around Azeroth by connecting the Ley Lines to this location based on several quotes from his fight in WotLK.
I believe Angelus hits the nail on the head. It does indeed appear to be a pocket dimension of some sort which is connected to the Ley Lines of Azeroth. Malygos was attempting to drain all of the Arcane on Azeroth through the Ley-Lines into the Eye of Eternity, after all.
And indeed, pocket dimensions appears to be a very Blue Dragonflight-y thing, and they use them very very frequently, even to serve as portable prisons. What goes into creating a pocket dimension like this we do not know, but I reckon it would be very very difficult, seeing we only really see the Blue Dragonflight using them to this extent.
It is worth noting however, I believe the Banks in Dalaran use pocket dimension technology (Likely inspired by their former Blue Dragon enemies).
The banks aboard the Exodar might also use pocket dimension technology, probably a leftover from the great arcane knowledge of the Eredar.
Actually, the goblin is a dragon. Or a super ancient elemental from before Thoradin’s time.
I was not aware of that! Or I had forgotten. But then that would indeed make much sense!
Can you think of any other examples besides the eye and the banks? You mentioned they were frequently used.
There’s a mage quest in Legion that would qualify I believe, with a goblin mage spec portals have made a small woody dimensions in his hat for his rabbits.
Yes, as I already mentioned, when questing through the Borean Tundra and doing the Coldarra quests and more importantly, the quests leading up to it, the Blue Dragonflight are capturing Kirin Tor mages, keeping them inside pocket dimension prisons for interrogation. You free one of the captured mages, Lady Evanor, from said pocket dimension by taking a crystal from the enemy, which then needs to be repaired, in order for Lady Evanor to be let out.

Quite simple.
It’s an eye of eternity.
I don’t see the questline suggesting that pocket dimensions are being utilized though, just that the prison boxes are utilizing arcane magic. The mages could be just physically held within? They seem large enough for that to be possible.
the eye of eternity rests in the eternal eye socket of the everlasting face of the never ending entity that peers with it.
" You’ve discovered a fragment of a special prison, <name>.
Malygos’ minions use similar prisons to hold their captured mages and other arcane entities, but this prison was constructed to hold something… stronger.
In hopes that the enemy of our enemy will prove to be a friend, you must search for the prison’s remaining fragments.
They are likely to be in the possession of Malygos’ most trusted underlings."
Upon completion:
" <The pieces you’ve collected begin to glow brightly in Raelorasz’ hands.>
It is done.
I sense a strong presence within this prison. Let us hope it proves to be an ally."
Dialog with Keristrasza after freeing her
"I am… free?
I was destined to spend an eternity roaming an empty abyss, and now am saved? You cannot fathom my gratitude, mortal.
When I refused to bend to his will Malygos bound me to that prison, then shattered it and scattered the pieces. Should I live one hundred of your lifetimes, I shall not forget this kindness.
Perhaps, in time, I will find ways to repay you. For now, though, we must focus our attention on Malygos. I am weak, and there is much to be done.
I need your help, <name>."
Ah yeah, that’s fair. Thanks!
The Eye of Eternity is a bit of a mysterious place, yet for its relevance in the lore it really deserves attention.
A different plane of existence?
It seems to be a different reality, possibly a pocket dimension that the Blue Dragonflight (specifically Malygos and his trusted loyalists) use to host the Focusing Iris and other forms of magic. But it might also be a different realm of the multiverse that the blue flight has discovered. Note that it’s not unprecedented, for it was the blue flight which discovered Aluneth in a different realm of existence. It is also consistent with the idea that Malygos studied the multiverse and its many planes of existence.
Malygos himself defines the EoE a different “realm” and that it has different rules than our reality: “I am without limits here… the rules of your cherished reality do not apply… in this realm, I am in control…“
It is indeed the hint at an alternative dimension, with its own laws.
A deposit of power!
The idea that the Eye of Eternity is a deposit of arcane power is confirmed in the Twilight of the Aspects, where the Focusing Iris (properly placed inside the Eye of Eternity) could syphon the entire magic of the Nexus; the idea that there is a lot of power in the Eye of Eternity is in sync with Malygos’ quote: “The powers at work here exceed anything you could possibly imagine!”
The Focusing Iris
The Focusing Iris is connected to the Eye and it is through the Iris that Malygos directed Azeroth’s ley-Lines towards the Nexus (and created the Surge Needles).
The fact that the Iris in the Eye can pull all the Ley-Lines towards the Nexus is deemed a powerful tool to syphon and channel
magical power, but might also turn Azeroth into “a second Outland!”, as stated by several members of the Kirin Tor during the Nexus War. Additionally to that, when Xylem took the Iris he tried to siphon all the magic of the ley-lines within himself, leaving Azeroth a world without magic. Through the Iris he also managed to “return” the magic to Azeroth later on.
It’s unclear to what extent the Iris holds the powers contained in the Eye of Eternity (not entirely or Xylem wouldn’t have to travel there). On its own it holds enough power to obliterate entire cities such as Theramore or Orgrimmar and if we are to follow Malygos’ quote, “the powers contained here could destroy the world ten times over!”.
The Iris has one main purpose; once placed in the Eye of Eternity it can manage the magic of the Nexus and manipulate the ley lines of Azeroth. As the name suggests, it’s likely the wa through which the energies contained in the Eye can be manipulated.
Note: Aside from the Demon Soul, the Iris is possibly the most powerful non-titan weapon on Azeroth.
The laws of your reality do not apply
The EoE allows a greater and safer control over magic. Energies that would cause catastrophic damage can be used in a controlled way from here.
According to the Mage Campaign, the Eye of Eternity allows the blue flight to reign over the arcane energies with greater ease than when the are on Azeroth:
“These discs are radiating with power! We must take them from here should they resonate further and cause a catastrophe…
I’ll send them to the one place I know where we can reign their energies in, preventing any sort of explosion. I’m speaking of the Eye of Eternity.”
The idea that the EoE has its own laws (which facilitate arcane magic) is touched lightly in the Hagara encounter in the Dragon Soul. Kalecgos (the new aspect of magic) sends you in the EoE to purify the Dragon Soul’s corrupted matrix. Yes, you’re right, the Eye of Eternity manages to purify the Dragon Soul’s mad-inducing/corrupting influence!
I speculate this trait that simplifies arcane casting is shared with the Nexus. The human quest giver at the entrance of the 5man Nexus instance states that the spell she’s channeling would normally rip her body apart, but that magic works differently in the Nexus. Likely, this is due to the connection to the Eye of Eternity.
The Nexus Vault
There is another place which looks like the Eye of Eternity. The Nexus Vault is where the blue dragons kept some of their most powerful artifacts such as Aluneth. It can be accessed from selected spots in the Nexus and shares striking similarities to the Eye of Eternity! The Vault Entrance was located in the Librarium; but the entrance to the vault was broken off when Malygos breached the Twisting Nether during the Nexus War.
The Vault seems yet another pocket/alternative dimension that the blue flight use to safeguard their most powerful weapons, though the fact the entire dungeon is named the ‘beyond’ makes one wonder if the Vault might be in The Great Dark Beyond instead.
Now the Nexus Vault raises more questions such as: the Twisting Nether? What relationships does it have with the blues’ magic?
The Twisting Nether
Azuregos claims that Malygos damaged the Vault by “breaching the Nether”.
Interestingly, the wotlk website stated that once harnessed, the energies are focused through the Nexus’ ascending rings and blasted into the Twisting Nether but in Twilight of the Aspects this function of the Nexus is not mentioned and is implied that energies are stored in the Nexus itself / in places such as the Eye of Eternity, which seems to be the interpretation offered by Xylem’s quest aswell.
While the specific connection between the Nether and the Eye of Eternity (or the Vault) is unknown, it’s possible that it has a connection to the Nether as the Nether acts as a bridge between worlds.
Oh my, what an answer Thank you so much!
Glad you liked it. I think the Nexus is an amazing place
Didn’t the magi at Ambermill make a pocket dimension to hide in?
It is! Say, being a mage, does your character have an interest in this IC as well? We could set up some RP!
Ah, indeed! Entirely forgot about that one.
