In case of a timeskip, wouldn’t they have to introduce some sort of deus machina to prevent some of the shorter-lived races from aging or even dying? Not everyone plays an elf.

I’d personally prefer a far distant future where all short lived races have actuactually died out and only elves, draenei and undead are left… but I guess that would be too much to ask. 
Even better: All short-lived races have died and reincarnated as Undead!

Meh, too crowded… and not aesthetically pleasing enough.
Time skip and a soft reset. No overaching story, just smaller scale threads like Scarlet Crusade, maybe one of those scourge lords we learned about at the end of SL, quilboars etc. Build up new characters in the background, also this might be a bit tricky but do not give these characters the spotlight right away, give em side quest or something and see how the community responds to them, then contibue building up the popular ones.

(probably the titans returning after the world soul saga triggers some sort of warning and the titans are like ok enough this is the last time we almost lost azeroth for the xth time in the last few expansions we’re reoriginating it all and starting over)
