What do you think will be next in ever-growing lists of WoW expansions?
I personally would like to see a more scaled back expansion. It would be great to see some old, down-to-earth enemies make a return and it got me thinking; how would that work?
I think a great opportunity would be that the story could focus on our return to our roots, which ties is nicely with the introduction of player housing and a potential old world revamp.
In the years spent away from home, traversing Draenor, fighting the Legion, dealing with the Shadowlands and so on, old enemies have taken advantage of the stretched resources of our factions.
We could see the Defias make a return, Elwynn potentially overrun and other areas. Necromancers have taken advantage of the dark energies in Duskwood and Deadwind etc. The Burning Blade clan has had more followers in Durotar and so on. Ogre expansion in Dustwallow Marsh and more…
I don’t know about you, but I would love to go back to fighting cultists and bandits and other trouble causers, as we use this time to sure-up our defences and our homelands, whilst we take somewhat a ‘breather’ before the next Big Bad turns up.
I think Blizzard will do a time-skip. You know, the whole: “Ten years have passed since the mortal races banded together to…”
And then I think they’ll present the new expansion as a form of next generation.
A world revamp – rebuilding after the destruction, dealing with local threats, conspiracies and evil schemes. Down to earth if you will and with a focus on the old kingdoms.
And then I think they’ll use the time-skip to have a change of the old guard and elevate a lot of those new and young NPCs they’ve recently created into being main characters. Shandris and Tess rather than Tyrande and Genn, basically. It’ll be a good opportunity (as will The Last Titan) to park some of those old NPCs that Blizzard can’t really squeeze more story out of at this point (looking at you Khadgar).
And then I think Blizzard will use the patches to explore the last few places on the map, like Tel’Abim and Plunder Isle. There can be a pirate sub-plot to that.
That’ll be my guess. And I think they’ll frame it as WoW returning to its roots. The good ol’ days but in a modern wrapping.
There’ll be opportunities for exploring the other side of Azeroth, the other cosmic forces equivalent of Zereth Mortis, The First Ones, the bigger baddie, and all that. But I think all that will come later.
The quote I used is almost the narration for the intro cinematic to World of Warcraft. It was just 4 years rather than the 10 I’ve used for my example, but I’d expect something similar as a setup for the expansion after the World Soul. But that’s of course just a guess on my part.
For reference:
True also. I think it was a 5 year time-skip between those, yeah?
3 years. 2 years is SL itself. “Shadowlands began in the year 35 after the opening of the Dark Portal, and Dragonflight will begin in the year 40.” - Steve Danuser
You know, those “boomers” are the ones actually paying for the game. WoW is a game for old people, and Blizz would do well to remember that.
A bit short for my taste. They should go for 50 or 100 years, so there can be some actual changes to the world. Sure, ppl playing non-“immortal” races would have a problem with that… true, but there’s a reason why I only play elves and draenei. And I’m sure they could think of some explanation why “the Hero of Azeroth” hasn’t died of old age yet.
To bo fair and honest - let’s wait what will we get as ending for World soul saga.
Maybe we will get new stuff inside wow or maybe we will get something like WoW 2?
To be fair - at this point it is lorewise nightmare to navigate trough entire thing.
Sure, they can toss raids, dungeons and mobs here, there and around - but the entire concept of doing things again and again with the same outcome is kinda meh. I mean we are going to the point of Great Evil that is known from very begninng/is not known and we beat it again and again.
Something fresh would be if we, the players, would be the bad ones for a change and I mean BAD, more than taking candies from children or doing something bad by accident but rather with premeditation i.e. starting new plague or something that kind of stuff…
Because seriously - we are at the point, where we are looting dumpsters in undermine xD like seriously - praised veterans that conquered everything with Molten Core as start trough Black Temple, Ice Crown Citadel etc to the point where you are looting trash bins for loot. This is why we defeated every great eveil and prevented every world ending scenario.
After the northrend revamp we want a booty bay pirate expansion that explores the azeroth we have never seen ! We have drive player housing coming and now i want a boat too!
