Where to start with warcraft books (2024)

Hi all, i am intrested to learn way more that what i know for the lore of this beautiful game, anyone knows where to start with the books?

The Sylvanas novel. It’s a master piece.

I guess a good chronological path would be :
The Last Guardian (basically opening of the dark portal , where Warcraft begins)
Lord of the Clans (After the Dark portal , but before Warcraft 3)
Day of the Dragon (Before WoW)
War of the Ancients trilogy. (Before WoW)
After this the books go by expansion .
The above books tie well into WoW classic and Warcraft 3 .

Than there’s the Warcraft movie books , which seem to deal with Draenor , before the dark portal , but not sure how canon those are . The movie itself is basically a sperate story .

Before the Great Wars:

  • Rise of the Horde

First War:

  • The last Guardian

Second War:

  • Tides of Darkness
  • Beyond the Dark Portal

Between the 2nd and 3rd War:

  • Lord of the Clans
  • Of Blood and Honour
  • Day of the Dragon

The 3rd War:

  • Arthas: Rise of the Lich King

Classic WoW-Era:

  • Cycle of Hatred

The Burning Crusade-Era:

  • Illidan

Wrath of the Lich King-Era:

  • none that I know of

Cataclysm-Era

  • Stormrage
  • Night of the Dragon
  • The Shattering
  • Wolfheart

Mist of Pandaria-Era:

  • Jaina: Tides of War
  • Vol’jin: Shadows of the Horde
  • War Crimes

Legion-Era:

*none that I know of

Battle for Azeroth-Era or the 4th War:

  • Before the Storm

Shadowlands-Era:

  • Shadows Rising
  • Sylvanas

Dragonflight-Era

  • no major novels as of yet

Note that these are only novels. There’re dozens of codexes, compendiums and more that explore the different aspects of the lore more in dept then others.

But if you want to get a general Overview of the Lore I can recommend you The World of Warcraft Chronicles 1,2,3 and 4 (releases in June/July)
