As I have not used Grounding Totem extensively in PVP, I am unsure of how far its effects go, and therefore I’d like some clarity on that.
We are familiar with the tooltip which states “…will redirect all harmful spells…”
My question is, what defines an ability as a spell? Of course I’m not referring to the obvious, such as damage abilities or CC from spellcasters. But as far as I know, Grounding Totem absorbs abilities from melee classes like:
Hammer of Justice (Paladin)
Death Grip, Asphyxiate (Death Knight)
So what else can it be used to counter, specifically against melee classes?
Can it counter things like:
Fel Eruption, Consume Magic (Demon Hunter)
Shadowstrike (Rogue)
Charge (Warrior)
And I believe it counters ranged interrupts, such as a shaman’s Wind Shear, or a druid’s Solar Beam, but what about melee/close range interrupts?
Perhaps I am missing something obvious and therefore asking a silly question, but I’d appreciate any clarity on this so I can lessen my ignorance.
You can counter any targeted abilty, categorised as “Spell”. Every ability with a magic school is a spell. Fel Eruption, Charge and Shadowstrike won’t be blocked for this reason unfortunately. Buuut you can block the interrupts from DK’s and DH’s as they’re both magic abilities. Freezing trap from hunters works also with GT (because the debuff you’d get is magic. The trap will go off but the debuff gets redirected to the totem) although it’s hard to pull off.
Yes with one exception. Countershot from hunters won’t be blocked as it is not a spell.
Solar Beam wont be blocked completly the beam will be on the totem instead which means that you still get silenced when you’re too close to it.
GT is one of my standard talent choices there is nothing more satisfying to see than a mage wasting his entire burst or Destro locks plunging 2 Chaosbolts in a row into the totem.
