I’ve just came back to WoW after a break since October 2018. I have this DH and a Windwalker Monk and a Retribution Paladin - all three around 375-ish ilvl. I will only raid Heroic since I’m very casual and do some M+10-12 at it’s highest, so very casual normal player.
I know when I’m that casual it doesn’t really matter which class I go with, but which one would you recommend anyway?
Any Pros and Cons for M+ for these classes etc. for 8.1?
I love the concept of WW monk, but truth is it was better in MoP/WoD/Legion than it is now. We are not in our happy place and we are not FOTM. We’re not terrible on the meters, but our rotation is awkward and doesn’t flow like it used to.
DH pretty much stole monks’ mobility niche, and pumps out more reliable dps. Few DHs moan about their class.
Ret paladin… most players seem to be upset with it. It’s either under-performing, or not giving people enough buttons to press - possibly both. As much as I like paladin visuals and want one in the future, right now it’s pretty low on the list of things I would suggest as a main.
So if I was looking at the numbers, looking to optimise, be wanted in PUGs and high on the dps meter… DH.
But. I, for my own purposes, would rather play monk, even if it is not at its best right now. WW is cumbersome, but MW and BM are still good if not great, and I enjoy having the holy trinity of roles available. Also, DH is grim, and it doesn’t suit the internal RP I instinctively build for a ‘hero’ character. They are about sacrifice and suffering and pain and laying their lives down for the cause… vs monks who are happy and whimsical and look to protect and nurture the people and things around them. Also, DHs look ridiculous in any content except Legion. Have you ever seen a DH fishing? No, because it’s completely absurd. Monks look serene anywhere
Thanks for your in depth answer it’s a hard pick for me, but somewhere I don’t like the playstyle of the DH It’s weird because they have sick mobility and OK selfhealing, but the playstyle damage-wise is weird to me and the rely to much on cooldowns, and I think that sometimes outside of cooldown windows, damage can be lackluster. All that jumping etc.
So now I’m collecting Pros and Cons about the sick mobility etc. can weigh up for the weirdness playstyle TO ME
Windwalker is definitely not as good/fun as in previous expansions. But I do love my monk regardless, maybe because of the monks other specs that I also enjoy.
Demon Hunter feels pretty cool when you look at the damage meters, and doublejump and glide are very convenient and fun. But the damage rotation gets old really fast.
Ret Paladin is actually my favourite for dps of the 3. They are however pretty cooldown dependant. But wings the cooldown on Wings is only 2 minutes, and there is a trait that extends the duration to 25 seconds so You have it availably fairly often.
The thing I love the most about the paladin is their survivability and ability to off heal, dispel, BoP, Freedom their team mates.
So If you are willing to sacrifice your mobility for a more supportive role (but still do pretty sick damage) maybe paladin could be for you?
The community perception seems to have shifted tho. Ret paladins are the second most represented melee dps spec on the raider,io leaderboard.
They’re at 13.8% (DH is 20.6%) followed by fury warrior and assassination rogue on 3rd and 4th place.
Of course warrior and rogue have another spec with their own percentage but still it looks like Ret pallys are gaining ground.
And it’s warranted, their aoe damage is nothing to sneeze at. They are doing alot better than they did in the last patch.
My own favourite melee spec is still at the bottom of the leaderboard (feral druid)
But it doesn’t bother me that much. I kind of like being the underdog.
But it’s kind of annoying to be declined all the time. I even got insta kicked from a group when they saw my spec.
Someone please correct me if Im wrong about these statistics, but this is what I see when looking at the melee population on raider,io for all dungeon runs
mythic+ > All runs leaderboard > Unique melee dps class population
It could be that Im looking in the wrong place and you are looking in the right place. I’m pretty new to the raider,io thing since I mainly do things with my guild.
Oh okay you are right. Actually that’s pretty amazing - but the first many pages are also the same persons more or less, and I will never do more than a +15 key anyway, so it doesn’t matter Though it’s still kinda hard to get a PUG as ret pala so solo play when my friends aren’t online is kinda a pain.
