Which level should I stop experience gain at?

Hi!

I was thinking of starting the cataclysm storyline to learn a bit more about some of the lore as I’ve never played any of that expansion. Seeing as I’m level 42, I can still start chromie, but I’d obviously outlevel the zones quite quickly.

I heard that you can stop experience gain, so I was thinking of doing that - but I wonder which level is ideal for that? Is it 49 or should you stop earlier?

The quest to start SL is available from level 48, but it’s your personal choice when to freeze your xp gain, just be sure to do it before 50 or there will be no going back.

I think I’d be more inclined to level through Cata on an alt to see it but you do what suits you best We all have our preferences.

Or whenever you have all the abilities and talents that you want (Look in your spellbook at which level they unlock)

I would stop at 48, as there are some places, like battlegrounds, that give EXP even when you’re exp locked. So even if you get some exp by accident, if you’re locked at 48, it most definitely won’t get you to 50.

I would block it at 47 because starting with 48,. everytime you enter your capital you’ll trigger timewalking to end and need to reenable it with chromie.

You should however ensure that you get to 50 starting the SL-quests as you then can skip the Maw-Intro.

Only skippable if the OP has a max level character progressed through here though. Unsure if this is the case.

I think at this point you can no longer re-join Chromie time if you leave it. I was doing an Order Hall campaign and hit a dungeon quest. I was 48 or 49 (can’t remember) and left Chromie time to solo the dungeon and couldn’t start it again.
So many 47 to be safe.

Although I’d not bother stoping xp. You’ll stop getting xp anyhow when you hit 50 if you’re not in SL zones. You’ll smash mobs much faster but is this a problem if you’re just wanting to see the story?

If I don’t remember correctly you can’t enter back into Chromie Time if you start the first SL quest, the intro into the Maw, and that quest auto-start at level 48. But it is possible to go back into Chromie Time if you delete the intro quest and then talk with Chromie.

47 is as high as you can go without getting nagged about the existence of Shadowlands, so that would be my preference for any chars not intended to jump into the Maw yet.
