I’ll play one of these to play before purchasing Dragonflight, but can’t decide which one. So I’m going by which one has lore more connected to Dragonflight?
Neither
The closest is maybe wotlk with Sindragosa?
Edit: one particular questline though takes you back to Ardenweald no spoilers
They have no connection to Dragonflight? I mean, surely something happens to the main characters
lore-wise i think blizzard for the most part tries to keep it in release order,
but if you’re thinking thematically i’d say the list is more like
Warcraft 3 - vanilla (also bc and wotlk tbh)
Wotlk - Shadowlands
Cata - Dragonflight
MoP - BfA
Bc - Legion
wod is a different timeline so it doesn’t really tie back too much
Neither one, really. Though it can be argued that if you do Cataclysm then jump to Legion and do Azsuna + Val’sharah, you can then do Ardenweald/join the Night Fae covenant in Shadowlands, and that’ll give some backstory for the Blue and Green dragonflight in recent history, which somewhat ties into Dragonflight lore.
BfA had some Wrathion/aspect lore towards the end of the game, but I don’t know how much of that (if anything) is still playable as it involved a legendary cloak required for the very last raid of the expansion.
I mean. WoD is Outland from the past 45 years
Story of escaping to Draenor: After Garrosh’s defeat against Thrall and rest of the Heroes, then decided to use a portal to escape to alternate Draenor
Not a pro on the lore but this my opinion.
There are subtle explanations and or connections to most of the characters from DF through out all the expansions, except WoD and BFA as I cant recall any Aspect/Dragon storylines or side stories in those expansions - though we do get Wrathion as a “boss” in BFA in one of the raids that turns out to be an illusion of him .
Connection to the aspects and what happened to them and their aspect powers would be Cataclysm . For me Cataclysm would be enough to get the gist though DF is a whole new story involving the Aspects.
Sabellion - The Burning Crusades
Sindragosa/Yserra/Kalagos - Wrath
Aspects and Dragon Flights - Cataclysm
Wrathion - Mists of Panderia
Yserra/ Sindragosa - Legion and SL
Thanks for the answers.
Now that we know how it’s connected to the other expansions - I wonder how the story continues for the main characters? I’ve not really finished any expansion, but bits from here and there and the story seems to build for some characters I’ve met, such as Malfurion, Tyrande, Taelia, Bolvar, etc. I do not know how their storylines finish or if they have finished yet. Last I remember is seeing an angry Tyrande jump somewhere in the beginning of Shadowlands. Prior to that I did see the Tyrande trying to rescue Malfurion in Legion bit. I don’t know much of Taelia & Bolvar, except that Taelia appears to be his daughter?
It’s a bit though to answer, neither SLs nor BfAs stories really carry over into Dragonflight, but there is a questline that involves Tyrande and what happened in SL, but truth be told it’s better off if you skip it because it was infuriating (also if I remember correctly you had to be a specific covenant in order to see it).
Take it from someone who has wasted a decade argueing about lore on forums…
Start off with retail, the most recent expansions, that makes the story for when you open up classic one day open your eyes on how this franchise has changed.
