So for some time now, apparently randomly, and only very occasionally, I’ll get a whisper from someone. It might be from someone in the guild, or it might be someone not in the guild (last night it happened when someone wanted to join the guild).
However … instead of coming through as a whisper, it would come through as a battlenet chat. But it wouldn’t show a name.
Usually, it’s a guild member, and I ask in guild chat if someone has whispered me, and we’ll talk there instead, but very occasionally it will be someone external. Which means I have no idea who they are, and can’t check on them by doing the usual keyboard combo, because there’s no name showing.
It’s certainly an odd situation for sure. It seems likely that this would be caused by having the character name same as the battle tag but then it wouldnt be something I could say for sure. We are not the developers after all
Make sure that you have reported this issue in game via the bug report function as this will highlight a new case of the issue right to the developers.
Thank you for the reply. I’ve now reported as a bug. I’m not sure the similarity between btag and character name is the issue, as although one contact i had was from someone with similar names, the other wasn’t.

I wanted to do an update seperate from the above, but anyway, here it is:
I’m not sure if this thread will be monitored, and I’m not sure how to add it to me previous bug report in game, but it’s just happened again with a different guild member and we did a bit of testing … she said it happened when she typed /w and then started typing my character name - then just tabbed to my name on the list the showed up. If she simply clicks on my name in guild chat and then starts typing, it’s a normal whisper.
I don’t like to necropost this topic but i have exactly same issue as the OP and i don’t want to make another thread.
There’s a balance druid in my guild I have to whisper for innervate with a macro. Every time i try to make the whisper macro work, it appears as a realID whispers althought we don’t have each other added in bnet and it’s like he doesn’t see it either.
I made reserches and tried the solutions other ppl with same problem offered, but none of them worked. And yeah the guy shares same name for btag and the character on the matter. I tried chat reset, tried on my freshnew UI on laptop and still same issue, also added the guy on bnet then removed him, annnd no changes.
Is there any other workaround to solve this issue?
