Who is responsible for this whole clone fiasco?

Again with this? I covered this many times before. You do know data overwritten is lost forever like a full format.

I’m not sure you know how servers work.

Imagine believing you can delete a 1GB USB drive full of data, then fill it up with other 1GB data, and NOT losing the original data permanently.

We can now effectively store 2GB of data on a 1GB drive. Just because its 2023.

You are completely right mate.

I am lucky that i was watching forums closely so i was aware about the deadline and cloned my chars. But most people that where not watching this abandoned platform, did not receive any e-mails (which was a mistake because EVERYTHING is communicated by mails since 2004) so they lost the chance.

Now the company decided to not offer the service anymore even if it is easily recoverable with today’s tech but i would not worry. Probably a new seasonal realm will arrive soonish.

Imagine believing that you can be accused for illegal pornography or economical scandals and overwrite your hard drives and believe that the police can not recover that overwritten data. Your are about to get a rude awakening…

How many times, no it’s not, if the drive is used for something else it is gone. Sorry but you have no idea what you are talking about. Do you even know how a hard drive works or about multiple pass wiping or overwrite wiping?

@Horrorpunk

I get all these emails from overwatch and other products that I really could not care less about (all respect to those players that do)

But when they are going to delete your characters, you do not get an email.

/sigh.

Yeah. I know exactly how it works. I would suggest you to spend 15mins on reading about recoverable overwritten data and you will be surprised.
Now send us a picture of your cave.

I like how you sidestepped the fact that your logic leads to the impossible conclusion that a limited space storage device can hold unlimited amount of data.

Since according to you nothing written can ever be permanently erased, you can just add more and more data on the same device, never losing any despite constantly overwriting the old data, ad infinitum.

Did i get that right?

Yeah. Poor communication sadly. If they communicated properly we would have thousands more people in era atm.

I know about it, and quite a lot, data can only be retrieved if it was deleted via the recycle bin and permanently deleted or if it wasn’t overwritten by using a sector scan and reconstruct, the best way to delete is a multi pass overwrite.

You are assuming it’s standard delete and not a secure one.

Not secure deleting data is against the GDPR.

You can recover any overwritten data. Get a 1gb drive full of screenshots.
Overwrite all of them with new ones.
Then find a data restore service and ask for the old overwritten ones. If you pay enough you will have them back.
There are thousands of cases of illegal activities that where uncovered with this method the past 20 years.

Mate. Once again. If what you say was true, then you could fill a 1GB drive with 10GB of data.

That is not possible.

I found this on a recovery companies website.

If you perform a full format on a drive, the data itself is erased and replaced with zeroes twice over. The act of replacing all the data on the drive with zeros means that there is no trace of the data left, which, in turn, means that recovery is no longer possible.

Imagine using USDOD 5220, the data is gone forever, that’s the idea of secure deleting.

There are multiple types of recovery methods. With different tech and different costs. It is another thing when your local store recovers data from your damaged disk and another thing when interpol recovers -overwritten in purpose- data from disks that where confiscated for serious crimes.

As i said the tech is there. But it is company’s decision if the cost of using the said tech is profitable or not.

No characters were deleted. They are available in Wrath of The Lich King Classic.

Exactly, enjoy the “expansion” you people asked for.

Haha

I am deeply disappointed that the clone service was discontinued without sufficient notice to players who were not actively engaged with Blizzard games. Having taken a break after TBC, I recently resubscribed to pay for the service to clone my level 60 AQ40 geared character in the hopes of joining a Nax guild and finally working towards tier 3 gear.

However, to my dismay, my characters have been erased from the Era servers without warning. A simple email about the service’s deactivation would have prompted many players to renew their subscriptions and pay for the clone service.

Instead, Blizzard chose to delete everyone’s hard work, which is appalling. I urge you to retrieve the backup and provide players with the opportunity to recover their characters and progress by paying for the service. Thank you.

The service was available for the whole of TBC, which ended when the service ended.

But it isn’t deleted, is it?

I’m aware of that, I just wasn’t aware that it had an expiry date, infact I renewed my sub last week specifically to clone my character to Era, I only found out about the cloning service ending after I google “where has my classic wow character gone”
