She was good, but her writing has deteriorated, to the extent that she is a bit laughable now.
Vanilla and TBC and WotLK she was actually relatable. Lets be fair, she was ‘The Bride’ from the ‘Kill Bill’ films. She had been Done Wrong, and she wanted her damned Revenge. That is about as relatable a story as you can get, and as old as time.
They hadn’t ruined her yet with certain elements that I will come onto, so her actual character was intact.
But it should have ended there. No Rubbish with Val’kyr joining her forces, no sudden revelations, just an understandably bitter woman, having seen the architect of her misery slain, choosing to end her existence on her own terms.
That would have been a truly poignant and beautiful ending to Sylvanas’ story.
Except it wasn’t, was it. Lot of thirsty fans out there (Who seem to forget she is actually -dead-).
Cataclysm was tolerable, she’d set in place a system by which new Forsaken could be created. Silverpine was actually interesting, when she ‘opens up’ to the player character during their horse ride. You find out in Hillsbrad that whilst she is cool with Blight, she doesn’t actually like mindless atrocity (Unless Farinell is acting on his own, but he does make his proclamation in Sylvanas’ name, so presumably she gave him the right to do so).
That is the point where I started thinking… ‘OK, the end of WotLK would have been a perfect end of her story…what is going on, where are they going with this, because I remember Starcraft, and I’m starting to get some nasty vibes…’
MoP she didn’t really feature in much, apart from that we hear that shockingly, the Forsaken got tired of someone -elses- fascist rule, and killed all the Kork’ron. No big surprise there. WoD she didn’t feature in, so her story stayed stagnant. Which is fair enough.
Then Legion. Well…That was just a car crash as far as her development went. “Yeah, I know the Val’kyr were working for me since WotLK, but only now, after my forces are demonstrably weaker, am I choosing to try and get more, because beggaring off on my own personal mission to do so is much more important than something like, Oh, I don’t know, being the WARCHIEF OF THE HORDE! during a world threatening invasion!”
And that’s only where it started to go wrong. It got worse. It got so much worse.
So, We already found out that she, like the other Windrunners, is Elven Trailer Trash. They all need Stronk Human Man to cling to. Sylvanas was kind of the last hope there, that she wouldn’t be a cheap Arwen and Aragorn rip off like Turalyon and Alleria, or a totally invented character who never existed like Vereesa just to hang off an Author’s self insert character’s arm. She was surely her own perso- Oh no, wait, she too got the weird Windrunner kink, and she loves her little Nathanos so much, she has to give him an improbable human looking model. Or lets be honest, Steve Danuser wants to -be- Nathanos, so this is why it happened.
He took an established character with a -reason- to be loyal to Sylvanas, and had to turn it into some kodocrap ‘Twilight’ fanfic writing. Amazing. What a way to ruin -two- characters at once who were actually OK without that rubbish.
But We’re not done yet…
If you play Hunter, at Trueshot lodge, we research Thas’dorah, and we learn the fact that Sylvanas didn’t even get her rank as Ranger-General because she was good at it, she got it because of who mommy and daddy were, and only -AFTER- her Big Sister had said she didn’t want the job.
So not only was she not holding the rank by merit of ability, but she was actually the second best choice out of people who were promoted by birth, not skill.
Who did the heavy lifting for the Horde in Legion?
Lady Liadrin and the Blood Elves. Shocker…
At this point, I thought they could not ruin her any further.
I was naive.
So then BfA.
What the hell were they thinking?
Nathanos starts giving it lip, and frankly the Champion of Azeroth could, and should have been able to turn him into a sticky pulp like he was a gobby teenager in a pub car park trying to act the big man. He’s ruined as a character, he used to be cool, now he’s just an angry chav squaring up all the time, who because of faction quests you’re not allowed to turn into paste.
Sylvanas blatantly obviously does not give a damn about the Horde, and in fact uses Horde forces, including someone supposed to be her old friend who she respects and also a new ally as decoys to feed to Aszhara, so she can go and play with a magic dagger and…stuff. Even worse, Her Boy Toy, who was also part of Team Decoy, just abrogates all responsibility and leaves the heavy lifting to…You guessed it. Nightborne and Blood Elves…
Meanwhile on the mainland, Rok’han is actually doing what Sylvanas should have been doing, and cementing the Zandalari’s inclusion into the Horde. Possibly because he actually cares about the Horde, which it is apparent that Sylvanas does not.
Sylvanas blights her own troops, does not care, and just acts like -consequences- is a word in the dictionary and she never got to the words starting with ‘C’.
She’s not even Chaotic Evil at this point. She is Chaotic Stupid.
She makes an intricate plan of the extreme art of Gunboat Diplomacy, how to force a peace between Horde and Alliance, and masterfully carries out that plan, right up until a few minutes before, where a dying Night Elf reminds Sylvanas that she was once alive and defended her people.
Then Sylvy loses her stuff… I mean -Why-? She knows what she was and what happened! She knows all this! She keeps telling us this all the damned time!
But no, one Night Elf says “You used to be a defender of your people” and she suddenly throws all her carefully, and skilfully organised plans out of the window, and proves what we learned in Legion. That she actually knows Jack All, and is a useless tactician.
How difficult would it have been to have killed Saurfang in Mak’gora and just walked away going “Well, I won” instead of going “Oh, I don’t know, There’s a faction that hates me, and a part of my own faction that hates me, why don’t I improve the situation by making -BOTH- factions hate me?”
Then come Shadowlands it is all part of her ‘master plan’
“Life Is a Prison! And I will set us all Free!”
“Umm, by Allying with a Guy called The Jailor, who runs an Eternal Prison, Because that is how you free people from prison…by putting them in prison…”
At this point she is a laughable idiot with no more credibility than a Scooby Doo Villain, or Skeletor from the He-Man Cartoons.
She is a farcical joke, and should have had a decent and credible end, as WotLK ended.
