actually probably I would download 50 GB on steam faster than wow 50MB because I’M sitting like at least 20 minutes on it.
Tried 999999 limit and also disabled limit.
I have been sitting on the initializing phase of this great, great 50 MB update for almost two hours now and initialization is at about 6 MB out of 50 MB. This is completely unacceptable.
I have tried everything, every little thing I can possibly find but it simply is stuck.
1 dungeon away from unlocking vault reward and this bs is keeping me from it. I hate this.
have the same issue, and ofc only with the blizzard update. every thing else is fast
have you tried contacting your ISP to see if they can see anything about what is happening?
i have no issue with it at all.
This might come late but they are likely using a technology that compares differences in every single file found in the “manifest” (you can notice “Downloading manifest…” on some updates) and then cross-references that info with your files on the disk.
The upside for this approach which Steam rarely uses is that it doesn’t waste any internet bandwidth between you and Blizzard’s servers. Steam wastes a lot of bandwidth as they are checking whether a file has changed. If the developer uses a huuuge chunks (say 3GB files) then, Steam will happily serve you the entire 3GB file whereas Battle.net will serve you only the portion changed and where should the launcher patch the given file.
Blizzard therefore doesn’t need to use regional - so called - caches which are available with very large bandwidth and serve this static data. Steam’s approach is costly and inefficient, but might be perceived as faster in this case. If say a game would be patched, the single point of huge friction are the manifests for Blizzard with small to no cost, whereas Steam would need to spool up additional servers or throttle some other games for the time being, resulting in a very costly and administratively difficult task.
The delay on this particular update might have been caused by an infrastructure error on their side though or the manifest might have been faulty, requiring the game launcher to recursively check / download / wait for additional data.
Please note that this is a speculation or rather inferred internal workings of observed behavior. It might be completely wrong, or it might not. I don’t work with Blizzard, nor Steam
