Why all the hate for female leads?

ok, so you don’t have a problem with girlboss characters as long as they look good while doing bossy stuff got it…

It’s amazing to me how fast this thread keeps moving.

Well, to be fair, what he’s talking about is related to how modern WoW tells its stories.

Now, I’m personally tired of this being explained (usually poorly) over and over again, which is why I’ve stopped reading his posts. Because I already know and I already agree with some and disagree with some.

For me, the problem isn’t female leads or male leads, and it never was. It took me a long time to figure out what it really is, because it’s hard to nail down. It’s not blacks, it’s not women, it’s not gays, it’s not trans, it’s not ugly or fat people - it’s none of that. I knew it wasn’t all along because I’m not that kind of person. I mean for heaven’s sake I play an overweight female character!

So why is it that these elements so frequently manage to annoy me? Doesn’t really make sense. It didn’t use to be like this.

But I now know what’s bothering me:
It’s trolling. Trolling is a word usually reserved for internet forums, but it’s something you can do IRL, too. Being provocative is another term for it, but it doesn’t quite match, because provocation is direct, whereas trolling is indirect. It’s people who work at these companies, Blizzard included at times, who take delight in inserting little ragebait nuggets into the product.

As an example, change male/female to body type 1/2 without adding additional body types or pronouns. This didn’t improve anything. All it did was change the names into "Body type".. GetPlayerSex() + 1. It didn’t even help the intersex or queer communities. It’s just pure ragebait towards conservatives because conservatives and TERF’s are bad so let’s make them mad.

But the coup de grace was when they followed it up by going on community forums or Twitter and immediately flaming anybody who took the bait.

So, ironically, I’m offended because they want me to be.

You know, if they wanted to use this change for something cool that would actually address those communities or just add more body options to the game, I wouldn’t have been annoyed at all. I got annoyed because it was transparent trolling.

Another example is relentlessly killing off fan favorite characters en masse by making them behave out of character. I think we all appreciate a great character arc with a great ending that is a death - nobody complains about Arthas for example - but it has to be satisfying. Otherwise it’s just bad writing, and when you’re specifically going after fan favorites it transcends that and becomes trolling.

Blizzard doesn’t need any drama right now. None at all. Stay low - that’s my advice to them at this moment in time.

That sounds extraordinary. Any time I’ve spoken to an AI it either confirms my biases, makes obvious mistakes (what it produces isn’t logically coherent or doesn’t work if it’s code), talks in circles, or gets offended/cuts me off. All they ever do.

I don’t think you understand what the girlboss archetype is. Just arguing blindly.

I don’t know it seems you are doing this here and the marking anyone who disagrees into being part of this woke, while people are agreeing with somepoints and then disagreeing with this main scheme youre putting this into. Starts to feel like you dont have clean flours in your bag

Care to share with everyone what you think it is?

It’s hard to bring it in like a Spiders Web that became too big. Trends that influence the industry as a whole and how Blizzard Entertainment is part of this.

Some times things are done out of spite. Like when Gears of War franchise was turned into a chick flick. A forgettable Latina girl boss inserted as the new protagonist. Pushing the “feelings in hallways” story telling from the stoic moments but set times to honour bonds of brotherhood and remember the fallen.

You see it created apathy to the point that nobody cares for a Gears 6. Same as nobody cares for a Last of Us 3 or sexual to Wolfenstein Young Blood.
There are consequences to alienating the existing audiences. These “modern audiences” never turn up.

This comes down to rage bait marketing. The Last of Us 2 drawn out same gender female kiss. Let’s you know that it was going to be pure propaganda and it did not disappoint.

It is too late. The DEI and ESG teams will continue pushing more and more content as they alienate and drive away more and more of the existing playerbase.

I disagree with several people on the forums although not intentionally. But convincing someone to see your way of life is different to the simple exchange of thoughts and ideas.

I mean, there could be, I don’t know for sure of course, but to me it sounds just like a conspiracy theory.

I don’t think that’s the reason.
They were definitely virtue signalling with that change, wanting to move as far away from their scandal as possible, but as many corporations tend to do; they made a change for arbritary reasons without actually understanding it.

It was definitely a weird change; I personally never understood it because it doesn’t actually please anyone as far as I can tell. Some don’t really care (like me), but I’ve never once heard a positive sound about that change.

What would have made sense when naming the body types 1 and 2, would have been to give players, after choosing their bodytype, a choice of what their actual sex is: Male, Female, non-binary are the obvious choices that would fit for most people.

Did they? Did actual devs do that?
I’d like to see that, because if they did, that definitely changes my overal stance that I mentioned above.

In that case, I think it’s more a desire from these new devs to move on from some of the characters we’ve been seeing for so long. As a creator that can get tedious and you want a change - a classic example of this is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle killing off Sherlock Holmes (of course he reversed this decision later on).

Now, that doesn’t mean you can’t botch a death by making it just badly written, of course. That’s another matter.

Ikr. I haven’t properly looked into the details of this experiment, so it might not be what it seems. But… The story is out there.

It isn’t. This is one of the things Moltensage is correct about. ESG and DEI are real investment model portfolios that do get allocated funds, and there are activitists who take advantage of these funds. The most famous at this moment is Sweet Baby Inc., whom I have personal experience with as one of their members asked an entire crowd of people at Nordic Game Jam to get up and yell “SHAME!” at an audience member for asking a question, which iirc was quite innocent. It’s been 6 years, and it was actually before SBI was formed.

The “virtue signalling” is the trolling. I’m not talking about trying to look virtuous. I’m talking flaming others to look virtuous.

But think about it - they are making a change purely for the purpose of saying how much better they are. The timing really did not help. It didn’t distance them at all, it made the situation massively worse imo.

Virtue signalling isn’t always trolling of course. You can show yourself as virtuous by giving to charities - Make-a-Wish is one Blizzard is famous for supporting.

And that’s the problem in a nutshell.

It didn’t improve anything, and they got to say how much better they’ve gotten.

Yes.

Yes they did. It’s 4 years ago now and I cba looking for it. It’s like finding a needle in a haystack. “Trust me bro”? There were all these pictures floating around of Blizzard Twitter users laughing over “white male tears”.

When the Shadowlands CE was announced, a Blizz employee went on camera and said that bigots should leave the community. How wide the net was isn’t clear.

Or how about making a shirt that’s colored like this: BLIZZARD? It’s low quality bait, and it’s annoying.

However, they have dialed it down recently, which is nice.

Seen the Godot engine this last week? So tired of it…

The ONLY good female lead is the one with her mouth full.

Alright, but that doesn’t prove that there’s people at Blizzard “who take delight in inserting little ragebait nuggets into the product”. That’s just not a provable thing.

I’m more lenient towards these things in my thinking because I stay away from getting involved with it as much as I can. In fact, this forum is how I’ve heard of the terms DEI and ESG.

I hardly use any social media, definitely not stuff like Twitter/X. I don’t game as much as I used to; WoW is pretty much my only vice in that regard. So I just don’t get exposed to this kind of stuff often, making it more palatable.

I mean, I’d have to see it for myself to make a judgement call.
Because context and wording is important.

See the whole ‘they’re eating the pets’ thing in America for what happens when someone just parrots an out of context statement.

I have no idea what that is.

Honestly reading stuff about this topic just makes me disappointed and sad, so I’m just gonna ignore it. I recommend you to do the same. If you can’t ignore it, just quit the game in my opinion.

Well, they said it themselves…

Don’t use it either, but it was being reposted here.

There was a writer, but I can’t find anything she made for Warcraft on Amazon. I must be taking crazy pills. Did they actually purge her? @Molten, do you know her?

Oh yeah…

Video game engine. Community manager went ballistic.

It doesn’t bother me enough. I just think it’s unprofessional.

Yeah, I think I know who you mean. Madeleine Roux?
I’ve commented about her several years back.
I found her remarks repugnant.

Don’t know if she still works with them, honestly.

As I’ve said plenty of times: I don’t like either extremist side of this whole issue.

Yeah, but there’s other examples as well. See if you can find the Shadowlands CE announcement. That’s another example.

Not really been able to find anything. It’s possible it’s in some videos on YT, but I don’t want to go look up Shadowlands stuff. The PTSD is still too fresh! :kissing_heart:

And yet Hollywood was even back before you people started making demands, more diverse than any other movie industry from any other place. So you are talking more crap again.

And yeah, in most movies, anywhere, it works like that. In indian movies, the Hero is an indian guy, beating the crap out of bad guys and his love interest is a pretty indian girl. Same with chinese and korean movies.
But it’s funny cause you don’t hear anyone taking issue with these “packages”.
I’m really starting to confirm that anti-white vibe I got from you.

And yeah, I’ll say you people cause you are one of the people who are pushing for this political crap, or if not, trying to justify them. You belong to that cathegory.

And if Hollywood really had that agenda then they were doing a crap job out of it because the best movies out there had a lot of non-white characters. So once again, you talk crap and what’s amusing about this is that you use a very skewered version of events that you twisted in your mind to try and pretend you were right. You desperately need to be right, is that it? How insecure are you?

This is starting to bore me.

Funny enough: This makes it clear what kind of person you are.

And with that; I’ll stop replying to you. You’re not worth my time.

While I am not sure the specific person that you are referring to. The reason why I consistently call them “activists” is because this is what they are doing.

Some of them are as overt Latoya Raveneau that by her own words “adding queerness wherever I could”.
This is the point. They turn straight characters into alphabet person for the sake of it. Race swap White characters for the sake of it. Gender swap male characters for the sake of it.
It is DEI for the sake of DEI. Then getting angry that the audience does not shut up and consume the slop that is produced.

Have to admit. Awesome meme. “They’re eating the cats they’re eating the dogs”. A viral meme with soooo many songs and remixes    that is getting a lot of people to talk about immigration issue. :+1: :+1: :+1:
He memed his way into the White House before the Biden Presidency

It is not a vibe it is an overt thing. Look at their post history. Find ONE post where ‘White - Straight - Male’ was said in a positive connotation.
Sorry to state the obvious. But White heroes being heroic in White nations are considered “problematic”.
Discrimination on the basis of skin color and ethnicity does not change it’s meaning just because White people are targetted.
