Why are people obsessed with collecting mounts?

I have a simple question. I really don’t understand the thought process behind farming some mounts.

I understand farming cool mounts, say Invincible for example; You will probably use it often, or at least for a while.

But why do people spend insane amounts of time farming mounts which are a slight recolor of some already existing mount that they have ?

Or farm some ground or ugly mount that they will literally never use ?

Reading the comments on the wowhead pages for some of these rare drops, they really do not enjoy this, in fact they usually outright hate it. Somehow, they are still compelled to continue doing it.

So why do people inflict this upon themselves ? Why spend days doing something you hate, to obtain loot that will never be used ? I could understand wanting to collect stuff, but in this case all that’s happening is that some greyed out box in becomes colored in some menu. That’s it.

I genuinely would like to understand the thought process behind this decision. Is it addiction ? Do people find that the excitement of the day it drops is worth the chore ? Something else ?

Its not obsessive its creating a form of progression and fun into their game that doesn’t just include raiding pvp and questing and dailies.

The same thing could be said for everyone and anyone who does content in this game.

You don’t need to understand why people have enjoyment in farming mounts just leave them alone to do so and no its not addiction what a wild accusation to make.

But do you agree that there is at least a large portion of these people that do not enjoy the process ?

My thought process is as follows. If you removed the mount drop, would people still mindlessly farm the same raids with myriads of alts every week ? I don’t think so. So it must be that what they like is getting the mount.

And yet, for many of these mounts, the only difference it makes is that a greyed out box becomes colored, since the mount is actualky never used.

So it feels to me that there is a boss that has a 0.01% chance of un-greying a box in a menu, and people spend hours to get that, in a process that they do not enjoy (as they would not do it if there would be no box to un-grey). That’s what I find kind of crazy.

For other things like dungeons and raiding, yes, the reward is a nice plus (and allows you also to progress to more challenging content), but people do enjoy the process (I would still do dungeons and raid with no loot).

Although I do agree that also in this kind of progression there are people obsessed in obtaining the full set of gear, to a degree where they do content they don’t enjoy, aside from the loot.

also, getting a full set of gear is infinitely easier and faster than farming 0,2-1% drop rate mounts. Also gear is necessary to play. mounts are not.

It keeps you occupied… else people would literally do nothing for the week after their raid and few M+s if it wasn’t for collectibles.

That is probably the best description I’ve seen in a long time. I do not understand the need by some to put down other people’s interests. There is no need to apply labels to others because you (in the general sense) dont share that interest.

Collections aren’t limited to just mounts. Many also go for transmog, pets, toys, titles, achievements etc.

Another person might chase CE and have 600 pulls on a single boss before achieving their first kill, or an M plus player going for a particular score, a PvP rating etc etc. Just because it’s something outside of your interests does not make it obsessive. Thats just being derogatory for no reason.

Criticism of awful drop rates or acquisition is no different to a fight being overtuned. It does not invalidate the whole activity.

Be a kinder community and stop looking to tear others down because you personally dont share that interest.

It’s nice to have a lot of different mounts that’ll match my different transmogs. Plus you use mounts alot, it’s nice to have variety’s

Is fine to collect mounts who likes it but to make statement game is not playable of p2w because there is new mount in shop while in game u have how much over 300+ is stupid?!

Completionism is just another way of playing the game. For me collecting a new mount is just as valid as killing a new boss in a raid.

Same could be said about litterally everything in-game, some people play m+ 8 hours a day (and hate it) some run raids on every class available every week, some que for pvp over and over for the entire day (and also bate it). You talk about gambling like loot isn’t a gamble everytime you so something, atleast with cosmetics they don’t reset every season.

People like collecting stuff. It’s that simple. It’s a common thing IRL (I do collect some things) and of course it’s a thing ingame too.

It’s the only content that carries on through each patch / expansion.

Everything you work hard for in this game becomes obsolete and worthless within a short space of time. Except mounts , pets , toys.
All the DF content will become just another tmog run , soloable , 3 expansions later.

Pushing keys is only useful uptoo a point before it all becomes a time waste. Mounts however never become a time waste. People still farm ashes of A’lar and Invincible to this day.

Alot of players see pushing end content hard a waste of time. Also if there’s a mount you can just buy a boost to obtain be done. Go back to what we enjoy.

I don’t understand how and why people force themselves to do things they hate, such as lots made themselves play Plunderstorm for the mog and despised every minute of it… but I do understand collecting. It’s a fun side thing, just not everyone’s cup of tea.

People are also perfectly capable of doing that and end game content, not sure why there are people spouting rubbish that collectors somehow feel superior and aren’t good at the game. So judgemental and sad, really.

Because they want to be the very best, like no one ever was.

Well it’s a delusion of achieving-doing something .

The same with transmo … I’m still using my t3 old naxx because it’s something amazing and no matter what they are going to put it cannot compare with the Old t3 Naxx…

I know people that they are farming every week transmo just to use for 10…20 years the same set .
The same goes with the mount .

There are people who spend thousands of euro for mount-pet … I would never spend such amount of something that i won’t use …

At the end You can say is a time-sink activity while being in to the game .

It’s not a delusion, gamblers addiction, gambling mindet, mental stability issue, etc. It’s just people playing the game for what they want to play, in this case collecting. Ya’ll need to stay in your line and stop upsetting yourself with how others play this game. Holy moly the opinions in this thread are rediculous.

The same principle behind people’s obsession with mount collecting also applies to the people’s obsession with collecting their BiS equipment.

It’s ‘collecting’.
You could apply your question to many different forms of collecting, in and outside of WoW. The answer will be a little different from person to person.

I don’t collect stuff in WoW, I just get (or try to get) the stuff I like.
It’s a simple rule that works for me (unless I’m lacking tender . )

All of WoW is a time sink. Gaming in general is a time sink.

One word: Fun.
Fun means different things for different people.
For you it’s clearly not mount farming, for others it is.

Same answer as when someone asks me why I go out early in the morning and decide to climb that ridiculous hard mountain outside: Because it’s there, and because I can.

Because people are easily tricked into doing things as well.
Some people simply cannot control themselves, and must absolutely have every single item in this game because it’s important to them.
Might not make sense to others, or even hold value to others, but that’s just how it is.

I have a simple question. I really don’t understand the thought process behind pushing M+ rating.

I understand pushing something with end, say Mythic raid for example; You will get an achievement which will make you proud, at least for a while.

But why do people spend insane amounts of time doing same dungeons which are a slight NPC health and damage increase of same dungeon they have finished?

Or pushing some past or ugly dungeon that they literally progressed years before ?

Reading the comments on the forums for some of these M+ runs with quitters and affixes, they really do not enjoy this, in fact they usually outright hate it. Somehow, they are still compelled to continue doing it.

So why do people inflict this upon themselves ? Why spend days doing something you hate, to obtain score which has no use? I could understand wanting to beat some difficult for achievemetn, but in this case all that’s happening is that some rating number becomes a little higher in some menu. That’s it.

I genuinely would like to understand the thought process behind this decision. Is it addiction ? Do people find that the excitement of the day they got another +5 for rating is worth the chore ? Something else ?

you can put any activity to original mesage to have fun
