Days without me name dropping the novel counter has reset to 0…
I’m not sure OP is referring to high/low fantasy in the first place, but then they haven’t elaborated on what they/someone else did that was apparently lore breaking, so…
When you break it down WoW is a very diverse setting, and I feel like you need to actively try to do something that can’t be justified by the lore. Most times I’ve found people scream “you can’t do that!” it’s when they’re knee-deep in the pedantics of magic and magic rituals, which is frankly just a bit cringe. You really can do almost anything in this setting, it’s just a question of whether your character can do those things.
Suppose that’s when the low vs high fantasy debate comes in, but again, both can co-exist perfectly fine. There’s room for both. If anything, like Telaryn mentioned, I think the dynamic between a regular footman and a mage is more interesting than between 2 mages. Contrast is cool.
Well, the way I see it is that we should stick to the universe we’re in. That being said, it’s a vast universe with so many things and possibilities. Keep things to the lore and logical and you can have great fun! For instance: Vaxir is a behemoth of a person who was once normal. I got to her being her size and strength etc by going by two lore quests found in-game that enabled her to be like this. So in other words it’s just a case of finding things in the lore that are fun! There’s a lack of restrictions when it comes to magic, so go nuts but keep it… Logical somehow. Like don’t have X race from another game in here, but you can teleport behind a wall or something.
Only anti-fun brigade stuff I’ve found is when people have complained vax is a lore-eff because of her power and size, though that’s only because said people don’t know her history nor the lore quests I knew of. So be prepared that, if you use something not well known, to direct people to the right area of expertise.
Also, some enjoy the low fantasy aspects, though WoW isn’t low fantasy at all. Let
them do their thing.
It’s less of a “People of AD RP Community” problem and more of a “Just People” problem. At the end of the day, it’s your choice what you want to RP, and it’s the choice of others whether or not they want to engage in your brand of RP.
I haven’t had any encounters of people whispering me about my RP being unacceptable (must be because I’m so good at RP ), but as long as your branch of RP fits into the atmoshpere and environment of Azeroth, then it’s all okay.
And while I don’t make a habit of acting mean, I will draw a line when people try to RP any of the following situations: Being the owner of an RP establishment (Like the Wyvern’s Tail), Trying to roleplay as a character archetype in a place where the odds of them being there are cataclysmically low (Like being a void android elf in Orgrimmar, trying to ask the Grunts where to find void power), and trying to establish some kind of authority through superfluous means (Roleplaying as the Captain of the Guard, demanding you sit on their lap.) Just to name a few.
The keyword here is "CONSIDERATION. Consider whether or not what you want to do IC is appropriate for the world. I know it’s a fantasy game, and I’m roleplaying an aging, decrepit zombie doctorman, but that doesn’t open the door for me to create an RP situation where I am bringing Saurfang back from the dead (even though I totally could. )
WoW always fused low and high fantasy tropes into one giant bowl. The entire world building boils down to “more fun” in many areas. So naturally you will get a lot of different people wanting more of different areas of the game.
You just need to find your people to hang out with and as long as you stick to the general framing of the universe (and some general RP rules like avoiding being direct relatives to some random big shot NPC char or messing too much with the main story) you should be fine.
If you want to check out some high fantasy stuff I would suggest to go look at Kaitylinn’s events.
But if you do please make sure to complain about how a certain someone can’t unlock the new Tirisfal phase because reasons. Thanks
That said, there’s probably always someone who’s going to complain. I’ve been told off for not using stars to mark mid text emotes. (I prefer using < [text] > if I can’t totally avoid it.)
Didn’t know a counter could reset from 0 to 0. Or does it have decimals now?
Without knowing any specifics, it’s hard to say what you mean as anti fun. And therefore pretty difficult to determine what issues you’ve faced, whilst learning roleplay.
When I started out RPing as a kid, my grand idea was to get a guild to attack Orgrimmar. Luckily the guild members who had some experience in RP steered the guild in a different direction.
To me at that time, attacking Orgrimmar would’ve been awesome, to others roleplaying it would’ve been considered griefing. And I’m glad I never pulled through with it in hindsight.
You don’t want to exacerbate the issue, but definitely see the others point of view, and or what they’re trying to say. Edit, if it’s not completely and utterly delusional, which can be the case.
Nowadays AD is less guarded with the term “lorebreaker”, which again I’m not against. The term lorebreaker got stretched thin for some very overly opinionated players, and just became a nasty whisper war. They’d normally be the ones stoking RP drama, best example I can think of was when a resident Church guild in Stormwind declared ICly that death knights were not permitted. The reaction of some of the more churlish and overly dramatic side of the community; was to immediately go to the forums, and start making threads about how awful this news was. They cited examples in the lore how they thought a church should be, argued for days, and achieved nothing.
That is definitely one of the last times I’d seen the term lorebreaker openly used, but in truth it was such a minor detail that could’ve been addressed in character. Even if drastic measures might be taken by a unified group.
There is a margin between high and low quality RP which often determines fun. I would personally consider a Vrykul RPer who flies on a proto drake chilling in Stormwind and acts like a child very low quality. But if I was in Northrend on campaign, and suddenly we were introduced to a Vrykul who happened to tame proto-drakes, it’d be pretty cool if the scenario was interesting. The concept of believability and reality should really stoke into roleplay.
In terms of “high and low” fantasy, I think these terms are pretty coined to extremes. And always adopted as a trend or tag.
And I personally don’t use either to define my roleplay, AHL have been to Outland fighting against demons and Fel Orcs, whilst on the other hand they’ve been fighting against ogres and trolls in Arathi. My general idea of low fantasy is that it’s meaning caves into to the lowest degree of fantasy, no dragons, no orcs, no magic, no magical swords and hyper realistic. High fantasy can be a stretched term from anything to flying cities and ground quaking dragons, it’s how a story is told which matters, if there’s no struggle and or it feels too scripted that’s when my immersion breaks.
“Muh lore” They cried out with a great wailing and gnashing of teeth. “Haha it’s my subscription fee.” They cried back and proceeded to do whatever they liked while a thousand people fumed on the forum that hardly anyone reads because we’re all in Discords now.
Hey i kept myself busy reading the entire grishaverse series which is my current hyperfixation
I can simp for Nikolai Lantsov instead if youd like
I don’t know anything about the grishaverse but feel free to gush about your current blorbo to me. I support people having fun
I am interested in a specific example of a “fun” concept people have poopoo’d.
The only thing I can think of that would reasonably get criticized are RP themes that are either lore-breaking or taboo.
Vulpera caravan RP or anything Vulpera related.
Oh, and anything with red eyes, I guess.
Whut?
Again, what?
Dark Rangers/Darkfallen are fine… in the Horde.
I recall someone who decided to have fun in RP, by having their nightborne DK breastfeed a vulpera kit.
Maybe it isn’t that people are ‘anti-fun’. Maybe they want to roleplay in World of Warcraft and not Second Life?
The concept of Vulperan caravans has been thoroughly dumped upon because of this subset of people.
Or did we forget Keti’s white van?
We don’t speak about that individual.
Dustpaw Caravan is still going perfectly well.
Hopefully Dust Scavengers too.
Never forgetti Keti’s verbal spaghetti.
Inside the box thinking vs outside the box thinking.

I am talking about OP
I am fully aware of what is acceptable and unacceptable.
There’s a line between interesting and absolute bonkers roleplay.
Even then, you can roleplay whatever you want really (within reason, let’s not repeat the Keti situation). But people don’t have to roleplay with you as a consequence.
