[20:42:47] [P] [Elahri]: why are you not using ironskin brew? (This is me noticing I’m not seeing it go up on his buffs)
[20:43:09] [P] [Censorednamemonktank]: I am
So, I check details. He had an amazing 35 seconds uptime on it during 10 minutes. That’s what? 4 or 5 uses?
You’d expect tanks would have moved on from the TBC/WotLK era of passive tanking, but apparently there’s still a sizeable portion of the community who thinks tanking is about holding aggro and cooldowns are for emergencies only instead of part of your gameplay.
What makes you come to the conclusion that “so many” tanks don’t use it, after a single encounter with a poor tank? Sorry but that is pretty ignorant for automatically assuming that.
As monks get stronger it actually becomes less important to maintain high Ironskin uptime as your passive stagger gets so high that the effects of Ironskin weaken due to DR. So its actually more effective to just wipe your stagger repeatedly (this is also the way to play if you’re using conflict and strife)
Exceptions are raid bosses who have deathblow mechanics or the start of big packs, or instances of consistently heavy magic damage. I don’t use Ironskin nearly as much as I used to when I first hit 120 though.
Because it’s a constant issue in mythic plus when I’m deciding to heal. I notice the difference in how much I have to spam heal the tank, very clearly.
Sounds like you only group in low keys where people haven’t learnt how to play the game yet. You know, since the game never actually teaches you anything anymore cause it’s all to faceroll while lvling
I don’t need to. My statement is the HIGHER the keys, not defining HIGH keys but rather saying you’re more likely to have better players in a +15 than in a +9.
My statement stands, the higher the keys the more likely you are to encounter better players. Up to 10 you have a lot of people mostly gearing up or trying to get to 10 for their chest.
But defining High keys is absurd. For some 14/15 is high. For others it’s 17/18…
With a monk though it’s lack of purifying use that probably results in spam healing being required when doing higher keys. As you’ll consistently reach high/max stagger at the start of packs whether you got there quicker via soaking more dmg thru ISB is less significant than writing off that damage at regular intervals.
I can’t speak for other tanks where I’d imagine yeah, ignoring shield block etc results in spam healing. Monks aren’t that simply though, it’s not always the best option to maintain ISB unless damage intake is generally low/average. Outside of this you should ignore it in favour of PB to relieve pressure on Your healer rather than stacking your stagger higher and higher for them to deal with constantly. That single brew use that ISB takes away from PB seems insignificant but it really isn’t when you need that PB and you don’t have a charge ready.
Agree. At a certain point in gear progression I’m higher mythic it generally becomes better as a tank to gear for more dps to increase your run speed (which decreases time spent taking damage) as that extra bit of bulk means a lot less at that stage than that extra bit of dps does.
This is particularly true at very high keys as many affixes or deadly mobs will kill players outright if you don’t obey the mechanics, and such things are timed within the encounter (every x seconds or so) so killing the pack quicker is more important than the tank being able to take less from the mechanic, as generally speaking even then it still has the same effect (it nearly kills you, just slightly less) and killing the pack quicker reduces the risk of other party members dying through being exposed to these mechanics, because they don’t share your bulk but they do benefit from your dps.
This is really worth thinking about in mythics because its very rarely the things that specifically target the tank that cause wipes, its things that target anyone (AOE, affixes) that do. This is why it’s generally understood in BFA that trash packs are harder than bosses because boss damage doesn’t tend to float around the group nearly as much nor as consistently, no are you dealing with affixes so hectically on a boss. There are exceptions of course like Overseer Krogus on tyrannical weeks (but then again, he’s hard because his encounter has a lot of AOE and non tank damage, not because he kills the tank quickly).
