I’m not talking about rude names, or even names like “Harrypotter” or even titles.
I want to name my character after a literary character I like but it is just not possible. I see about 3 people in the entire world named that on the Armory so it’s a very unique name but it’s not a silly or immersion breaking one and it actually sounds like a name. I have tried adding that name as a friend on both Horde and Alliance on the server I want it on and it just says “character not found”. Is it possible that the person just hasn’t logged in yet and therefore cannot be added? Some level 1 just sitting on a great name like that for years and you can’t do anything about it is a bit dull to me.
I know people will just say “just get another name luls” but to me a name is an important part of enjoying the character, seeing as I mostly play on RP realms. I also even recall back when I started all those years ago that Blizzard on the webpage suggested you to use a serious name.
It’s getting a bit long here but my question is basically just why can’t I get that name and do you think the current way that Blizzard deals with taken names is good, in that people who hasn’t even logged in on a character for two whole expansions (or indefinitely for classic) can just keep these names when someone would love to use them?

@Ironyx: Couple of things spring to mind… Have you tried using the name on some other realm to see whether creation succeeds or a problem / error / reserved occurs?
Second, if my recollection on this detail is correct, names of deleted characters are generally not immediately released, but stay reserved for that account for a while (short time for lowbies, up to 90 days for bigger characters?).

It also could be taken by an alt, I have many alts on different servers that I may not have logged into for two whole expansions (I have changed servers due to old servers dying), yet I am currently playing.
So this could also be the case with the character you added as a friend, you may or may not ever see them log on but they are still playing on another server.

I’ve tried using it on about 25 realms now.
It’s a name from the Dune novels. So there’s 3 main houses, one is named Atreides, and the two others are named Corrino and Harkonnen. Harkonnen and Corrino are both available but Atreides isn’t. But nobody want’s to be a Harkonnen or a Corrino…
U could try using character map on ur pc which allows u to copy characters like ã or ø, thats how i made a mage named jaina 
So she’s not really named Jaina but Jäïnä or something?
Characters below level 10 do not show up on an armory search, search my name, 2 of the results are me but i know for a fact i have the name saved of at least 5 or 6 servers
Do you realy think people dont have one of the big names from one of the best known science fiction series saved away on alts on every realm

See that’s what I thought but if you look it up on the Armory there’s one single character with that name and he plays on a Brazilian server. Atleast that’s the only result for me. It’s like Blizzard made that name specifically unavailable.
And characters under level 10 aren’t shown on the armoury.

Back when GM’s unlocked names on request via tickets, I tried to get the name “Jade” and found that only about 13 people or so had it on a character, in spite of it undoubtedly being something many would want to name a character.
The GM’s explanation was something to the effect of, and I’m paraphrasing here: “Blizzard occasionally locks a name in case they want to reserve it for an NPC or item and that can lead to the name definitively remain unavailable to anyone after that has been locked”.

I thought people liked the bad guy and since Emperor Shaddam IV died the house corrino doesn’t really exist. Unless you are trying to use Dukeatreides as that’s a title and not allowed.
I think someone is using it and hasn’t played the character for a long time or it is below level 10.

Atreides is based on greek mythology which is very rich in content.
Expected to be taken.
I’ve seen many guilds and players in different online games holding similar names.

If you read the books set before and during the Machine crusade you will see why the house name came to be. It is based in a kind of mythology to do with the thinking machines.
Really? Is it the winged underpants that puts people off?
I wouldn’t be surprised if there was lock on the name now (for cooyright reasons), especially given that there is a new film coming out. Also, as others have said, characters under level 10 don’t show up on the armoury and people have always tended to reserve popular names from fiction.
Shame there are no playable cat people in WOW, then you could be Meow’dib.
Not all toons show up on the armory, could be a level 1 someone made to reserve the name…
