Why can you cast mind control without facing target?

I noticed when in a game against an outlaw rogue today, that when I turn my character model away and cast mind control, the cast goes through but if my character model is facing away from him, I can’t cast spells like Holy Fire or Smite.

Mind control is an offensive casted ability just like smite, yet I don’t need to face the target. Is there a reason for this? What’s the general rule or principle that’s being applied when deciding if an ability requires facing the target? I noticed Shadow Word: Pain does not require facing the target either.

This has been in the game forever but it just occurred to me today when having to deliberately look away because of gouge.

These things are writen in the tooltipp

Controls a mind up to 1 level above yours for 30 sec. Does not work versus Demonic, Undead, or Mechanical beings. Shares diminishing returns with other disorienting effects.

It is not explained in the tooltip.

Hm that must be because you dont need to be in front of the target i mean ist descript in spells where you need to face the target you know what i mean?

Because it is …mind control? When you control someone’s mind, you don’t need to face him to keep doing it. You control his mind therefore his feet. Also, some casters abilities like curses or dots etc work whithout actually facing the enemy.

I think most abilities that deal direct damage (bar some exceptions like swp) have the orientation requirement.
I don’t know of any ability that deals no direct damage that has the orientation requirement.

Or are you asking why it is designed like that?

The most consistent type of ability I’ve seen this with are CC ones, like Polymorph

Its called “mind control”, not “face control”…
