Though there’s no exact lore on this (that I know of) in most literature that reference Demons and summoning knowing their true name is typically a huge part of calling them to do your bidding. Therefore you can’t rename them, because if you use a name other than their true name, they you can’t summon them or compel them.

As said well aware wow says nothing to this effect but it could be the case.and the rerolling of names isn’t so much rwrolling a single Demons name, rather the warlock trainer in exchange for monies gives you the name of another demon they know so you can summon a different one (with a different name).

It’s actualy not. When you summon demon for the first time it gets bind to you and every next time you will summon with the same exact name. Unless you reset it with your trainer.

Patch 4.0.3 - this NPC allows a warlock to abandon a pet for a fee (50g per pet per abandon) and get a new one, effectively changing your minion’s name .

The naming is random (like it is when you first summon), so if you’re unlucky you’ll have to pay again until you’re happy with the name(s) of your minion(s).

It doesn’t matter which pet you already have summoned. When you choose to abandon one pet, the currently summoned pet is going to be dismissed (equivalent to you dismissing by hand), and the pet type you abandoned will be summoned (no summon animation, it happens instantly), already having the new name.

It also does not look like there is a limit to the times you can pay to abandon a pet.

This is available to a level 45 character. I do not know if there is a point at which it is not available. Logic would tell me it does not have a level limit.

aye nice to know, never played a lock :))

The succubus names are usually ok. The imp names are sometimes weird though…

this is the kind of posts that make me lose all kinds of hope for this community

Originally you had the quests where you would summon the demon with items you gathered through a quests. You’d then defeat it and “bind” it to you. After which the trainer would teach you how to summon it. So it is always the same demon.
You can experience it in classic if you want to see. The voidwalker is the first that shows it.

Be aware that your imp might trick you in signing a contract you did not want !

It is in wow too. There is at least one questline (or was it in vanilla?), where we help demon hunter Loramus to slain powerfull demon and in that questline name plays a big deal.

Only the ‘special’ kind of animals have names. Normal wild animals do not.
And now when we tame one of those named mobs it innitially has that original name.

Anyway… you summon something against their will and force them to do your bidding. It’s no wonder they don’t like to be given a name by you. :innocent:

I would say that Hunters have a bond with their pet. The hunter cares for the pet, the pet loves the hunter most likely.

Warlocks just treat them like slaves.

Death Knights should be able to name their Undeads. They have no brain anyway and probably forgot their name already.

some do have names, if you tame a rare pet or a named pet, that name will be there, but you can change it.

As I am sure World of Warcraft is based on western fantasy/folklore/stories. So I would approach this from a fantasy perspective with religious influences. In religion people believe that the name is the very identity of the demon. Normally, the demon is very reluctant to give the name up, as that is an admission that it is present and possesses the person. That’s why it is thought that if you know a demons true name, you will be able to control/summon/banish it. Therefore you cannot change a demons name. I like to imagine Blizzard uses this reasoning for an in-game setting, purely speculation tho

Warlocks aren’t really supposed to be… loving.
They enjoy pain and suffering and living creatures are just fuel for their magic.
That would imply they don’t really have attachments to anything on the level of naming a lesser creature that temporarily serves them.

Besides it’s not the same Imp or Void Walker, it’s just one of many you summon from the endless void.

You summon demons from twisting nether, so they come from a place in which they already have a name. You can always roll the dice for new pet name at demon trainers.

You are so right here. Names like wormeater just feels a bit weird. Random human names with first and surname would be pretty cool.
