Why cant you play WoW in English in Russian servers?

Please explain. I cant imagine why that is a problem. My friends play in Russian servers and they still pay the European prices since they are also from europe. I would love to play with them but im bad at reading cyrillic. So why the hell cant I play on russian servers in Englsih wow.

Someone said that in private servers people just change the language file and people play in english or russian on the same server.
So whats the deal?

No idea, all I can say is that EU wow has some language restrictions like the one you mentioned. Another example is the Chinese and Korean clients are blocked in Europe while in the US version they are not. So if you’re an Asian immigrant who’d rather play in those languages or just want to use the opportunity to learn them, tough luck.

I have wondered same time to time. Cant play with my friends who play in russian servers because client

You can. Russians can play with us since quite a while. Including outside of automated queues.

Not to turn the thread into something else. The way things are going I can see Russian servers going offline due to sanctions beginning tomorrow. I would try avoid going there atm anyway, just to see how things turn out.

Those sanctions dont affect them in Russia. Blizzard (or anyone from the US) isnt allowed to make new investment, trade and financing in the areas russia has recognized as independent states. Other sanctions are not put in place until russia moves past the borders of what russia has recognized. Biden has stated this.

What i said is the current state of affair. As i said the borders of what russia has recognized as the new states. Not the Ukrainian borders we from the west recognize. Russia was already military present in those areas before recognizing them as states. They will observe how many troops russia deploys and what they do and then act according to that. Its basically crimea 2.0

Where are the russian language servers hosted ?
Also, it’s not just russians playing in russian language, as it happens to be an official language in quite a few different countries.

I don’t think they’d remove access to the russian realms. What’s possible though is an increase in subscription price specifically in Russia.

i dont think that matters much as long as there are business transactions going on. if there are trade sanctions blizzard cant really, well, trade, with russians anymore, i suppose that includes money transfers.

Can’t you play together cross realm? Several years ago Blizzard gave RU players access to EU realms.

Nothing is going to resolve the issue of people typing in other languages. At best in the future we may find games have a built in auto translate but it’s likely to have hilarious results.

As for sanctions, Blizzard will act accordingly if any are put in place, they have no choice.

Yet, even my wife wants to put the game in Russian language, she can’t create a character on EU servers…

Where the servers are located it doesn’t matter. If US impose sanctions over all Russia then Blizzard, as an American company, will be required to comply to those sanctions. And even then, it won’t be Blizzard directly the one who will comply, it will be Amazon because Blizzard games servers are hosted on Amazon Web Servers.

They have already removed access from Crimea and Iran (and North Korea too, but it is not like they will have players even if there were no sanctions). For now, they surely will remove access from Lugansk and Donetsk. Blizzard wouldn’t want to stop gaining money from Russia or any other country but if the US government declared that business illegal with sanctions Blizzard will be forced to comply, they want it or not. They do not have a say on the matter. In this case, not even Bobby Kotick’s opinion matters.

Because thats different. Other technical limitations coupled with Blizzard being Blizzard.

From what I understand, you can’t change the language of servers (likewise, you can’t create a character on a German server and change the language of the interface, dialogue, etc. to English or any other). But you can play together from different servers.

I don’t think so, while it’s true that without Russian players it would probably be a ghost town, there are other countries that use Russian even as a second language or have a significant Russian minority.

You can, just go ingame and try it. Only the Russian language/realms are restricted that way.

Russians get the sub cheaper from what i recall. If there was unlimited access to the EU region then why wouldn’t people make a Russian account to save money.

Unclear to me too. Like, I saw people play with German and Gpanish langueage at English realms, can be noticed if they link something in chat. Why can’t the same be done with Russian language on English Realms and vice versa?

I mean my wife lives with me, in Germany.
She just wants to play with me, but with Russian text ingame…

That was possible before. Blizzard changed how that works to prevent non russians from doing that.
