Why capping my FPS reduce them overall? (and cap/uncap questions)

Hi,

I have seen a lot of different opinions about cap/uncapped FPS. My monitor is 144 Hz (no Gsync/Freesync and I have Vsync OFF as global setting in Nvidia control panel) so I usually cap at 142, but I notice that in places with a lot of things going on my FPS can have dips to 120/110.

The thing I don’t get is if I go uncapped on my FPS, in those same places with activities going on, my FPS are no longer 120/110 but usually above my refresh rate, like 150/160. In most of the world I can usually go way above my refresh rate, with whooping 500+ FPS in some areas.

I can “feel” when I play capped that my FPS dips from 142 to 110. I don’t feel much change when it goes uncapped from 300 to 160 on my 144 Hz monitor. So, should I go uncapped? Is it bad for the computer health? Is there a mid-point where you can cap at higher than your refresh rate (maybe like 250?)

Thanks!

I can confirm that something is wrong with Capping your FPS in Game, right now i did test it, normally i have fps around 100/105 after leaving fps uncapped i did get boost of 20 fps, so i did get 120/130 so there is something off for sure, but i mean this is blizzard nothing new, i can suggest to you if you want to cap your fps do it in Nvidia control panel, for example i have 144hz too monitor, so i cap it like 141hz. and NEVER go more then your Monitor, there is no point if your Monitor is 60hz game need to be 60fps rest is only waste, so you have 144 that mean only 144fps you monitor can see, if you are getting in game more than 144fps only thing you will get more is Heat of your cpu/gpu Hope i did help little bit. Have a good one

Thanks! Actually I am already capping through Nvidia control panel, not in game directly, that is why I am a bit confused (Vsync is also off in game and through Nvidia).

I feel there is something I just don’t get about FPS capping that would explain it would induce lower FPS. Particularly if I am not using any of Gsync Freesync Vsync technology?

Sorry I also forgot to mention I have an AMD Ryzen 7 7800x3D and a 4070 Super. Don’t know if that plays a part in capping or uncapping.
