Why did sargeras invade azeroth ?

if sargeras could just cut azeroth in half so easily (he failed because the titans stopped him at the last second), why not just do it without an invasion that failed. and when he saw the azerothian heroes are attacking the burning legion (and winning) why not just cut azeroth in half and finish the job ?

Canonically, 2 reasons.

  1. before the events of Legion, he wasn’t physically close enough to Azeroth to do that. The War of the Ancients was an attempt by the Legion to use the Well of Eternity as a power source for a portal big enough for him to get through

  2. he didn’t want to kill the Titan Azeroth, he wanted to awaken it, and corrupt it with Fel, to be the centre piece of his Dark Pantheon.

The invasions of Azeroth were intended to destroy those that would stop him awakening it, the Azerothian champions, and to set up both a portal and a foothold for him.

It seemed like the correct thing to do at the moment. Hindsight is 20/20

Indeed seems to be his plan, just like with Argus. He resorted to his sword when the other titans started vacuuming him back, since he didnt have time to corrupt her anymore so he tried to kill her
