Just why? What was the point? Just to show off the new models they’ve made for her?

Story got dropped because of certain Narrative Leads leaving the company…
Who knows. She didn’t add anything to the expansion that Merithra couldn’t have.
It kind of undercut her death in Legion and the story in Ardenweald.
Her return was basically to set up the Malfurion/Tyrande reunion in 10.2.6.
For that to happen Malfurion (who already returned in BfA) had to be taken from Tyrande again and they way the decided to do that was for him to take Ysera’s place on Ardenweald.
Unfortunately that whole narrative thread was rushed and they neglected to set up in game (or anywhere else for that matter) the reasons for why she needed to return in the first place.
